I am 15 weeks tomorrow and leaking amniotic fluid. The emergency doc says I should go on bedrest but this is impossible with my new job. I have to commute 5 hours per day and cannot miss work. Any advice? Has this happened to anyone else?
Oh man! I am so sorry you're going through this! I would explain what is going on and that your and your child's health are at risk. Hopefully they will understand and you can get some flexibility on their part.

I started this job a week ago. There is no HR department. We gave our 60 days notice to move and can't afford for me not to work.
You're talking about the life of your unborn child though...it's more important than money. Leaking amniotic fluid is serious. I really don't think you have a choice. It's go on bed rest, hopefully save your child and possibly lose your job or keep working and risk the life of the child. It sucks, but there's no alternative I see.
I am so sorry that you are going through this, I can't even imagine how stressed you must feel about this; however I don't think that the doctor would advise bedrest if it was not medically necessary at this point for the safety of your baby. Here is what I would do if I were you, first I would place an immediate call to my own doctor and loop them in on what is going on and what the ER doctor told you. They should know what is going on with you anyway, but they may want to do their own exam and confirm the ER doctor's diagnosis and whether or not they agree with the bedrest restriction. Second, I would call my new boss and let them know what is going on. I would say it in a polite way, but as a statement and not a question. Something like, "Obviously I know I just started this job, and I am clearly very committed to it or my DH and I would not be moving for it; however this is what happened this weekend. I have a call in to my Doctor to get in to see him/her right away to find out exactly what is going on, what I can and cannot do, and how soon I can return to normal activities. The doctor I saw at the ER said that for now, I have to be on bedrest so that I don't lose the baby. I will call you as soon as I hear anything at all. I know this is horrible timing, but unfortunately it is out of my hands." Unless your new boss is a TOTAL DB, there really isn't much they can do. FXFY that things get better soon.

I know you are stressed... But how would you feel if you did not do what your doctor advised, and lost the pregnancy? How would you feel then? To me, it would not be an option. You can get more money (even though I know it sucks)... Your child on the other hand is not so easily replaced.
Talk to your dr too... He maybe able to help you. I'm sure you are not the first in this predicament.
Totally agree with the girls. Amniotic fluid is absolutely essential for your baby to survive. Call your ob immediately and let them make their own evaluation. They may think it was a misdiagnosis. Regardless, your baby is worth anything.
Trigger Warning (LC and loss) --
Married May 2008
Beautiful daughter Alyssa born April 23, 2011
Precious son Isaac born at 34 weeks in April 27, 2014 with Potters Syndrome Type 4 and Down Syndrome - trusted into the arms of Jesus after 3 hours.
Pregnant again! Due August 8, 2015 please be healthy, little one!
(results on 2/4/15 showed no Down's and it's a girl!)
1) ER Doctors have been known to be wrong. I was diagnosed with a complete miscarriage at 6 weeks pregnant. Low and behold, upon talking to my midwife, we were REALLY surprised to find a baby with a heartbeat at 7 weeks (THANK GOD!). I agree that you should call your doctor and confirm/work out a real plan for care. Know what you should expect - when it might end, what your odds are, etc.
2) Remember that you have some options in terms of money during this time frame. Are you covered by a disability plan through your employer? If not - or you end up being terminated - you might qualify for government disability. And if you lose your job for this - you most likely qualify for unemployment benefits. Also, be sure to know your legal rights in your county/state. You might not be allowed to be fired for a medical reason such as this.
I am 17 weeks and 2 days ago I had a scare, because my underwear were very wet, and it didn't look like discharge...it looked like water. so I went to the emergency room on Sunday- my midwife advised me to because my doctors was closed I really thought at first I was leaking amniotic fluid and was so scared. I was told at first that it could lead to a miscarriage and is extremely serious and requires a lot of doctor visits to it monitored and a lot of rest..They did an ultrasound to measure my fluids and thank god all my tests came back fine.. it wound up being a Infection in my bladder. Did you see your regular OBGYN yet about this? Nobody on here can tell you what to do, but I think most of us would agree that your baby comes before everything. I understand what its like to be in a situation where your job is on the line- but if this is 100% the case- you HAVE to rest. There is no way around it. It is really hard to make a decision like that. But I would talk to your job about it, and explain everything to them. I Could be wrong but, I don't think they can fire you for a medical condition involving your pregnancy. And a serious one at that. I wish you all the best, and hope everything works out for you.

I'm sorry this is a tough since you have a new job. You should speak to HR.

And if your boss IS a total DB, you don't need that job anyway. No job is worth losing a child over.
