To swaddle or not to swaddle..

Hi guys, my LO is 12 weeks old and we are from Syd - Australia. It's summer & very hot atm and I don't swaddle her anymore as I don't want her overheating & she seems to sleep fine (hands in the air just like she don't care) for at least 3hrs at a time at nights.. Is swaddling beneficial? I understand it restricts movement and avoids SIDS but she's a strong girl and has mastered tummy time..I also don't like how it restricts them. When should you stop swaddling a newborn?
Your feedback would be much appreciated xx

Re: To swaddle or not to swaddle..

  • At 12 weeks they're not considered newborns anymore. I personally haven't swaddled because they don't do that at hospitals here in Japan and my little guy didn't like them when I tried (and yes I tied then tight enough). I'd say if LO is doing fine without it then don't use it. But I'd bring it out only in times of distress or comfort if that helps LO feel better. Just make sure she/he is in a cool enough place and keep an eye our. Plus babies are good at crying when they're in need of something ;) My little guy loves to let me know when he's hot (it's winter here) from his blankets.

  • We never swaddled my son. He hated it. It's been off and on with this LO.

  • We still swaddle the girls (though they are starting to break out). I'd stop but they sleep REALLY REALLY well when swaddled.... like 8-10hours well..... and I LOVE that. So we keep doing it and are loath to give it up.

  • We're based in canberra, so I've had the same thoughts. On hot nights I just pop our little guy in one of those zip up sleep suits with just his nappy underneath. You can get some that are really breathable. That being said he loves being swaddled and will sleep a solid 5-6 hours at night.
  • We use the sleep sacks and she loves them.  it gets hot in AL but it's just enough cover to keep her from freezing with the AC.  Right now, the winter sleep sack is doing great as a blanket for bed.

  • Has anyone tried to Merlin sleep suits as a transition away from swaddling? We're thinking about getting one of those as LO is starting to break out of his swaddle sometimes.
  • I haven't tried the Merlins though I did look into them. I did just order some swaddleup 50/50s though to try on the girls. I figure if they are happy with those then I can zip off one of the arms and see how they do and once they adjust to that I can zip off the other. I hope to eventually just have them in a sleep sack.

  • We have the Halo sleep swaddle too which gives you the option of one or both arms out. I kinda hate it because so much Velcro! But he sleeps pretty well in it.

    Anyone try this one: https://zipadeezip.com

I'm worried about the Merlin being too warm in our climate (so Cal), although the rave reviews make it tempting. Still swaddling now, but looking forward to granting him his freedom.

  • My son just hated to be swaddled. He rather have his arms free. And I have a crocheted blanket on him (I live in Canada) I know by the books your not suppose to have that. But with MY baby that works best. He sleeps 6 straight hrs. Your the mom you do what feels best ;)
  • @teaismCAgal we just started using the Merlin sleep suit and LOVE it!  It is pretty thick, so we just have DD in a onsie and socks with it, and unzip one side just a tiny bit sometimes, but since we started using it at night, she has slept MUCH better.  We never swaddled with her arms in though because she has always liked to use her hands for comfort.  @Zu8, I think that the swaddle helps reduce SIDS as opposed to having a loose blanket in the crib.  As long as you put your LO to sleep on their back, I'm not sure the swaddle vs. sleep sack makes much difference.  In fact, our swaddle sack said not to swaddle with arms in once LO can roll over.

  • We never swaddled after some failed attempts early on. He just never went for it. He sleeps about 12 hours a night with one 20 minute wake for a quick snack. He's almost 12 weeks. So, it is possible. I say if you sense your LO is over the swaddle, go without.
