Breastfeeding

How long before seeing LC?

I'm a FTM. My LO is 3 weeks old and we've been exclusively breast feeding. I've had pain for the first 30 seconds to a minute of nursing. I'm concerned that it isn't getting better as what I've found online says it will fade after 2 weeks.

I'm thinking about seeing a lactation consultant but am not sure how long I should "wait it out." How long would you wait?

Tia!

Re: How long before seeing LC?

  • I'm waiting until my LO's 2 week heck I so that we can check his weight and make sure he's gaining appropriately, and I plan on asking his ped about my concerns then. Some days are better than others, so I haven't asked for help yet but part of me wishes I had- so if it's bothering you I would suggest looking into getting support. Good luck!

  • If I recall correctly the first 6weeks were rocky for me with breast feeding, but it's Definately worth a call to an LC to see if it's worth making an appointment. Our LCs are great and give free advice over the phone when they can. Good luck. I hope things get better soon.
  • I don't think it's ever too early. I saw a LC when we were in the hospital (we were there for a week so I saw them a couple times). They helped a TON, and I am pretty sure I wouldn't have continued BFing if they hadn't been there to help. I say talk to one if you have concerns

I consulted a Lactation Specialist who was part of my doula service. She said, "Breastfeeding shouldn't hurt!" So, I found it to be true after working with her 1:1. I did not find the LCs in the hospital to be much help. One even told me as I struggled with no milk or colostrum on day 3, "Sometimes it never comes in, nothing you can do about it..." and shrugged. I told all of them the babies were tongue tied and it was causing issues- no help. I told them I knew baby girl #2 wasnt doing it right because it really hurt!... not even advised to break the latch :-(

Check with La Leche League International in your area? Or breastfeeding support groups- through your local hospitals?

  • I would call asap.
  • i would see a LC right away! soreness is normal, it depends on the skin every woman is different but strong pain is not. My LC adjusted my latch and my position and the pain went away! I also used Silverette for the soreness and never experienced any more pain! get all the help you can and be strong it will get better!
  • I actually saw one the day after we were discharged from the hospital; that's the standard for my son's pediatrician's office because they have in-house lactation consultants. I wasn't having a lot of issues and still found it really helpful to talk with her and have her offer some tips, so I would highly suggest you see one as soon as you can if you are having pain. I agree with previous posters that it's never too early! Breastfeeding is hard at first, so take all the support you can get if it's available to you! :)

Im an IBCLC, while some pain during the first 5-10 sucks is common in the first few weeks, it's not normal.  After that period of time does the pain go away completely?  Is baby having 6+ wet diapers a day and 4 or more poopy diapers a day?  Try this method for latching on, it helps a lot of my moms.  Also be sure the bottom lip is completely rolled out and the moist portion of the lip is in contact with the breast.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

Call right away. you don't want to risk the relationship tanking, and a LC consult can help you, even if there is nothing wrong with the latch. They are invalualable!!

  • Thanks everyone! LO and I are doing fine now with no more latch pain. I just needed to toughen up my nipples, I guess. I appreciate your input and won't hesitate to call a lc if any problems show up again.
