Has anyone gotten the RhoGAM shot at 28 weeks?

I am A- blood type and my husband is an O+, I have informed my OB and she said that I will have to get the RhoGAM at 28 weeks. Has anyone gotten it and can tell me how it is? Are there any side effects? Thanks

Re: Has anyone gotten the RhoGAM shot at 28 weeks?

  • I have had that shot 3 different times. I haven't had any side effects or symptoms. They will give you one right after the baby is born too.

  • I have had to get it already this pregnancy due to bleeding at 17 weeks no side effects just a little soreness from injecton site. I will have to get another at 28 weeks also and after delivery.
  • I had mine at 17 weeks due to bleeding. When I had my other 3 children I had separate jabs during but it's all changed now, they just give you one at 28 weeks.
  • I'm A- as well. I had it with my first and no problems. I had three miscarriages and didn't get the shot (former OB said I didn't need them) but my current OB is testing my blood quarterly to make sure I'm not sensitized. So far so good and I'd plan on getting another at 28 weeks.
  • I had one at 28 weeks with my first. Don't recall any side effects.

  • I've had the shot 4 times ( two previous pregnancies) you get it once at 28 weeks, and again after birth. It's no big deal ( other than I was prepared for a shot in the arm, and was quick to find out they give it to you in the booty =P )
  • Do they really give it to you in the booty? That's just weird, last time I had one of those shots I was a little kid... I just ordered the shot so hopefully it'll arrive in time for my appointment. Thanks mommies
  • I've already had one this pregnancy as I had an amnio. I've had to have them during both of my previous pregnancies and also after birth. It's fine just a bit sore afterwards depending on who gives the injection lol. I've always had mine in my arm x
  • They give it in the arm or the hip/butt. The hip/butt hurts less. No side effects and it's necessary so you do not build antibodies against a future child.
  • I've had three, only causing a mild sore spot for a day (I think even less sore than a vaccination shot). One in the booty for a 9 week miscarriage, one in the booty for 6 week bleeding, and one in the arm when I had more bleeding at 10 weeks (turned out to be an SCH). No weird side effects for either area at these different points in the pregnancy.
  • I'm also A neg this will be my first shot glade to here no side effects not excited for a shot though.
  • Had it with my first also. Agree the worst part was when I found out it was in the booty!
  • I'm pregnant with my 5th baby. Being A- this is just part of the deal. My hubby is o+ and 3 of my kids are a positive and only my 4th born came out o-. He's also the only one who contracted my blood antibodies - which can be fatal- except that he was a negative as well so it was ok. The shot is super necessary and protects the next baby in line to come thru your womb
  • I've donated blood 5 times in the past, all 5 times I had A+ blood. I got my bloodwork back from my first set of testing for this pregnancy and it said my blood type was A- so I have to get the shot next month. It kind of worries me, I have asked the Dr. to check my blood type, but she ignored my request. Is it normal for your blood type to change? This is my first pregnancy (if that matters.)

When you donated, the Red Cross probably does testing for something called Du variant. If you possess this, then you would be considered Rh positive because they wouldn't want to transfuse your blood into a true Rh negative person because that would sensitize them. In blood typing at my hospital, we don't test for the weak D variant in Rh negative patients. We only Du test Rh neg newborns born to Rh neg mothers to verify mom doesn't in fact need the Rhogam shot. Giving the Rhogam shot to an Rh positive patient won't hurt. It's when NOT given to an Rh neg mother who gives birth to an Rh pos baby could there be a problem.

  • The hospital will most likely test your blood again anyhow. Every time I got one I had to wait while they made sure I was negative.
  • I also have to get the shots. You will get one at 28 weeks. And if the baby has your negative blood type, you don't have to have one at the 72 hour post delivery mark. However if baby has the daddy's positive blood type, you will or else their antibodies will turn against your body and can be very severe. You don't have to get it after birth every time just if baby is positive and at 28 weeks because the blood type is unknown. Hope this helps. And no side effed for me.
  • I had mine at 28 weeks. Typicall you receive it at 28th week. After birth, they check for babies blood group. If it is RH positive you will receive one before 72 hours of birth. If baby blood is RH negative there is no need of shot after postpartum. You need additional Rhogam injection If you have spotting/bleeding during the pregnancy or procedure like an amnio, then you need an additional Rhogam injection. You nedd rhogam after a miscarriage as well. Check these articles for more information.
