Pregnant after 35

Lovely hospital visit...

Well yesterday I spent 6 hours at the hospital after an NST in the office.  I'm almost completely certain the nurse had the monitor positioned in such a way that it was reading my heart rate and not the baby's.  The alarms were going off and no one was coming in.  I finally got a different nurses attention and they adjusted the monitor and it looked ok.  The doctor however wasn't convinced what was going on so off to the hospital I went for more monitoring.  Turns out it was looking at my heart rate.  If you can't tell mom's heart rate from baby's, that's a bit of an issue though.  I was laying there reading a book for a few hours and my heart rate was 140.  Yeah read that right.  Lowest it went in the 6 hours was 115.  The doctors weren't really happy.  I got checked out by about 4 specialists before they finally gave up and said they couldn't tell what was going on.  Fortunately I got to go home, and didn't get put on bed rest or anything.  I guess since they ruled out anything big, there wasn't much to do about it.

  • How stressful! (Pun not intended.). Hope you have an easy, restful weekend.
  • Your heart rate was that high? How is your BP? You swelling?

  • hmmm...seems weird to send anyone away with a heartrate like that with no explanation or plan.
  • Hope you feel better soon even if they can't figure out what if anything is wrong.  Did the LO get an all clear?
  • Yikes!!! I've been having high heart rates too. Because of my gestational hypertension I have to check my BP several times a day and it also checks my pulse, I've been over 100bpm this whole 3rd trimester (even after resting for hours) and some days it's as high as 125 or so, they seem concerned at the OBs office, but haven't done anything about it. I finally brought it up again at my last appt and Dr said it's because the baby is so high, he's pushing on major veins and also up against diaphram and I can't get deep breaths. But still nothing. It doesn't seem related to the BP though, b/c no matter what BP is, high or low, pulse has been around 120.  It can get higher when I take a shower too and I feel faint with a strong/rapid heartbeat, by the time I get out it's in the 120s again, this happens every 3 showers or so, doesn't seem to matter what time of day...

My BP was like 120/68 and no swelling.  LO got the all clear about 20 min after being there, but me they gave the "million dollar" work up.  Couldn't find anything wrong, so just going to carry on.  I'm really shocked I didn't end up on bedrest or anything.

  • Wow, I've never heard of that happening, glad you checked out ok though! I hated the NST, I enjoyed the first two or so, and then when I was up to going twice a week I actually got stressed about having them! DS was a crazy active baby and we always got stuck there waiting for him to have some "down" time before they would let us leave..
