Breastfeeding

Nipple frustration

In the past week, my LO has been doing something he's rarely done. He will latch, pull away, latch again and do this for a good 10 minutes. He pulls at my nipple so vigorously that they are super sore. On top of this he seems so distraught during the feed he pulls away crying and thrashing his hands/arms around. I'm worried there's something wrong with my milk flow or production ._. He just turned 12weeks and we feed on demand. He's done this behavior before but never for a week at every feeding. It's really worrying me.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do?

Re: Nipple frustration

  • Would really appreciate some advice here. It's gotten so bad now that every time I feed or nurse I wince in searing pain. I can't really go to the doctor because I need my husband to translate for me and he is busy with work. So if anyone please has any advice Id be grateful.

  • I havent had it go for a week, but sometimes my little twin does that. I stop BFing that side for a while and pump express until it feels better 12 or 16 hours last time. Also I put coconut oil on my nipples to keep them from crack8ng whwn. They are sore. It took us a bit to get off the bipple shield, but those are supposed to help with sore nipples and I found them for sale at Meijers about $9. You could get them from Amazon, but you need to get the right size or it won't help.... if you have prime, I would order several sizes and return what doesn't fit. I am sorry you are going through this. I hope this helps! I am new to breastfeeding too, so it may not be the best advice, but it has worked for me...

  • A few questions to help figure this out:
Is it usually at the beginning of the feeding, the middle, or the end that he does the thrashing?
No new medications or anything that you're taking, right?
    Both sides or just one?
What have you tried so far to make it better? Has anything seemed to help?

It's all during the feed honestly.

I'm not taking any medicines. And I also haven't changed my diet or added anything new to what I eat. I only cut down on breads.

I usually feed on both sides each feeding. So it is both sides.

I've tried taking longer breaks between feedings thinking maybe he isn't hungry; tried breaking it up and burping/helping expel gas; I massage; tried every position I know; used hot clothes/heating pad to get milk going; expressing a bit before each feed...

And nothing seems to help. He continues to to it. Last night my mother in law watched him and I strictly pumped to give my nipples a break. I haven't fed him yet this morning though so I'm not sure how that will go.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I think the nipple shield idea maybe helpful just to ease your pain. Also maybe try a few different positions for feeding. Try to unlatch baby before he/she pulls off harshly.
  • I actually got in touch with La Leche League here in Japan and am setting up a home visit to get some help. They've been helpful so far in sending me links and vids and answering questions so I hope the home visit will help more.
  • Oh good! I'm sure bing in Japan is an added stress with the language barrier. I'm glad you have the appointment as I didn't have much advice to give. Please update us to how it goes.
  • Mine did that when frustrated with slow flow. LC said she was trying to stimulate another let down which was just not happening. She told me to switch sides as soon as this happened. It took a few days but it helped my nipples heal and pain went away.
  • Still waiting to hear back from the La Leche League.

But LO is still doing this but not as frequently and is now constantly nursing again. He is on both sides up to 45 minutes-one hour each, making feedings last all day long. I can barely put him down long enough to pee! The only reprieve I get is when he does go down for a nap and then I have to eat since I couldn't all day and I'm exhausted. I'm really hoping this is just a growth spurt and ends soon.
  • Mine does this when flow is low after pumping.  I can't offer anymore help except try to use your finger to unlatch before he rips off.  'I also use the shield only when he does this.

  • Well I had a consultation with a La Leche League member and got some helpful advice. It seems my LO has a shallow latch and pulls away at the breast instead of going to it. She wasn't sure why he did that but said it could be a lack of supply to his demand. She showed me some ways to feed where gravity helps but my LO is strong and pushes away still :( She told me to nurse more and maybe it'll build my supply more.

So I tried doing everything she mentioned and my LO was still doing the same things over and over again and always seemed hungry and just couldn't get full.

Today after our vaccination appointment I pumped and offered that straight away. He did the same thing with the bottle as he does with my breasts. He pulls away and cries hard. I tried for about 15 minutes to get him to drink and he only took about 30ml of the 90ml I pumped. So, I gave him formula milk instead. I made a full bottle and he drank all but 10ml of it with no problems whatsoever. He never got mad, pushed it away...nothing.

So now I believe there is something wrong with my milk or something that he isn't liking. I've not changed my diet at all aside from cutting back on carbs and haven't added anything new to it either. He was fine up until about 10-12 weeks old and now just will not take my milk in any way.

Any ideas what this could mean? I feel I may have to go strictly formula if he won't take my milk even from a bottle ._.
