What is a glucose test?

I go march 17 and I was just wondering if it really is that bad and can I eat before I go?

Re: What is a glucose test?

  • If I remember correctly I don't think they like you to eat before hand but I'm not exactly sure. You go in and they give you this really sugary drink ( I always got orange given to me and it tastes kinda like really really sweet orange pop. You have like 20 minutes to finish the drink Then you sit for an hr and then they do your blood test to see how your body reacted to that much sugar

  • It's a test that detects glucose(sugar ) in your body to see if you have gestational diabetes. If you eat beforehand it will raise your glucose levels making you endure the three hour test. You eat before that and your levels aren't right your going to be marked high risk and diabetic so yes eating beforehand wouldn't be the best idea just like any test or procedure where they tell you not to eat beforehand.

  • You need to ask your ob because all tests are different. I wasn't allowed to eat at my last ob's glucose test but with my new one I can eat protein but not much sugar or carbs before hand. Call and ask they'll give you all the details. As to what it is.. It's to rule out gestational diabetes.
  • Definitely check with your OB. My first OB with DS said to eat breakfast and my appointment was a morning one. This one told me to fast although it's a 4:00 so I've got to get clarification on that one.

  • I have to eat...my appt isn't until 3:00
  • My doctor hasn't said a word about it. Is it necessary or is it just done based on certain health factors?
  • It is necessary. If not done, you risk health issues for you and baby. It's done typically near the end of second trimester/beginning of third.

  • I can eat before mine. However if I fail and do the three hour test I have to fast for that.
  • My ob never said to eat or not to eat. I will call tomorrow I was just thinking about it and thought I would go ahead and ask y'all!
  • Its very necessary. Gestational diabetes is nothing to mess with. I have type 1 diabetes so that is one thing im excited about not having to do :)
  • It's really not that bad.  It probably differs on where you go, but it's basically the same idea.  You go there, they give a sugary drink, I was told I had to drink it in 5 minutes.  It's not good, but not horrible.  The orange tastes like really sweet, flat orange pop.  The lime is really sweet and gross.  At the place I go they refrigerate it which helps.  So you wait around for an hour and then they draw your blood.  You would definitely not eat/drink anything during that hour, I was told water was OK.  As far as eating before, ask your doc/mw.  I was told to eat normally before, but avoid anything ultra sweet or carby.  The example was, don't eat a huge cinnamon roll and show up for the test.  So heavy protein light on the sugar/carbs.  But obviously if they tell you not to eat then don't!
