failed glucose test

So I took my 1 hr glucose test early (at 16 weeks) because of a family history of diabetes - not gestational, but type 1 and 2. My doctor said our hospital is stricter than most and measures a failed test at 130 or above whereas most other places measure at 140 or above as a failed test. I got 135. Now I have to in for the 3 hr fasting test. Do I have anything to be worried about? What symptoms should I be on the lookout for? I do get very hungry which makes me very moody. And also lack energy need to nap when I get home from work everyday before I can do anything else. Anyone else have a failed glucose test?

Re: failed glucose test

  • I failed my one hour and passed the three hour. I took mine at 10 weeks due to my dad being type 1. Good luck!

  • I have heard of many people failing the one hour and passing the three hour.  Good luck

  • I do not want to look forward to this at all.
  • I have no family history but failed my one hour glucose test and passed the three hour one with our first daughter. I wish I could tell you the three hour test is a breeze, but I was super uncomfortable and the drink hurt my stomach. I'm sure it will turn out fine, just be prepared to be a little uncomfortable during the testing process.
  • My doc said roughly 25% of women fail the one hour and about 5% fail the three hour. This is to guard against false negatives. They figure it's better to make more moms uncomfortable for the three hour test and pass then to have moms running around with diabetes and not know it.

I've heard the three hour test is rough so hang in there!
  • Last pregnancy I failed the one hour by ONE POINT and had to take the three. It was easily the worst part of my entire pregnancy. If you want to read a play by play... https://dearexpletivebaby.com/2012/04/23/sugar-me-timbers/

    Good luck!
  • With my son I took an early one and passed. Then I took the 1 hour at 27 weeks and failed. I went in for the three hour test and passed. Don't freak until you get the results of the 3 hour test.
  • Also failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour. Happens so frequently. Don't stress like I did.
  • You only failed by 5 points you should be fine when it comes to the three hour. Signs/symptoms feeling funky/lethargic during prolonged times of not eating. eat small healthy regular snacks throughout the day and you'll be fine.
  • I had gestational diabetes with my first two pregnancies. It's not fun but there's much worse. They do teach you about all the symptoms and how to control it by diet so it's very unlikely you'd need meds or insulin shots. Try not to worry about it until you know for sure. There just isn't much you can do until then.
  • My Dr had me do a 1 hr glucose screen at 10 weeks which I failed. Had to fast for 12 hrs then did 3 hr test and passed. My ob said the 1 hr is just a screening and the 3 hr is a full test. I get to look forward to another 3 hr at around 26 weeks when it's usual done. Yay :-(
  • This is my 4th baby. I have NEVER passed a 1 hour test, but always pass the 3 hour tests. :-)
  • This is my 2nd pregnancy with GD and like PP said....as much as it sucks there is a lot worse that could go wrong. So head up and don't stress. I got all caught up on my TV shows on Hulu while doing 3 hour test. It's annoying and the drink is gross yes but not the end of the world. In all honesty the GD diet is how we should all be eating anyways...lots of lean meats and veggies with limited complex carbs.

As for your symptoms, each person has a different reaction to low blood sugar. I get super duper moody, like hysterically crying one second then major bitch mode the next and everything in between. And I can also get confused and just all of blah for lack of a better term. But I have never really noticed any symptoms when my sugars are high. Maybe just a little jittery. I did gain some excess weight with DD before my GD was diagnosed and regulated. This time around I've lost 10lbs from a combination of morning sickness and starting the diet early.

I was doing a weekend GD check in but no one responded to the last one...maybe now that more people are getting tested I'll start it back.up again.
Please excuse typos....auto correct hates me. =)
