How depression and lack of exercise can effect baby's health

Hi All,

I have been at home for last few yrs, just studying or watching TV. Our neighborhood is also not good so don’t go out for walk much. About 6 months back I saw a psychologist who told me I show signs of depression.

At this point when I am 23 weeks pregnant I am really concerned upto what level depression and lack of exercise can effect pregnancy and baby’s health ?. For past one week now I have started going for walk daily now.

Any suggestions as to what sort of safe exercise\stretches I can still do, though I have been totally inactive for last 22 weeks ?

Thanks

  • Based on this and your previous post I really think you need to see a therapist again. If your depression is so bad that it's affecting your daily functioning you need to do something about it. As for exercising, walking and swimming are good but I wouldn't do anything without talking to your doctor first, since you haven't had a normal routine

  • Definitely avoid very high impact activities, but you should be fine with walking, swimming, stationary bike, etc.and other low impact activities. The Bump website also has some fitness/exercise articles that you could discuss with your doctor as a guideline. I'd talk with your doctor about getting more specific since you weren't active before becoming pregnant.

  • Thank you for sharing.  I suffer from depression and see a psychologist and a psychiatrist.  It definitely helps.  I am also at home the majority of the time.  I hope you are doing better and I think walking is great.  I want to start walking but the weather here has been freezing with no signs of improvement!
