Sleeping Situation

TL;DR - Where does your baby sleep overnight? (Crib, cradle, RNP, PNP, etc)

Ok, ladies....I'm having my first bout of mommy guilt. Just want to get an idea of what other people are doing for where LO sleeps.

When I was pregnant my DH and I took infant care classes which basically terrified me of the possibility of SIDS. I was planning to have the baby sleep in the RNP next to our bed, but the nurse who taught the class said it wasn't the safest choice, so we went out and bought a cradle instead.

Long story short, our baby will only sleep in the cradle in the mornings (like 7 am - 9...I have no idea why). So I've been putting him in the mamaroo to sleep at night but I feel like it's not the safest. He likes the motion and I guess it feels more like someone is holding him than the open cradle does.

Any advice? I feel so much less worried when he's in the cradle. I check on him constantly in the mamaroo so I'm not getting a ton of sleep anyway but it's better than nothing.

It's 5 am now and he's in the mamaroo for the second stretch tonight and I'm just feeling like a bad mom that I can't get him to sleep in the cradle where he's safest.

Re: Sleeping Situation

  • Have you tried moving him to the cradle after he's soundly sleeping? I'm still waiting on my second child, but with my first we had to do a lot of trial and error to find the right amount of light and sound to get her to sleep in her crib. We had to leave the lamp on in her room for a couple of nights, give her a pacifier, and activate the motion/sound toy strapped to the crib. After a couple nights there, she would sleep there with less light.

Jake had that the first few nights. When we put him down at night he'd scream, and then during the day it wasn't an issue. we ended up sleeping on the couch with him next to me sucking my pinky finger and me wearing 3 layers instead of a blanket (also paranoid about SIDS here). Our home nurse told us he probably didn't like his crib/cradle because of all the space. So, she took two large muslins, rolled them up (secured with a hair band or whatever) and tucked them on either side of him. That way he feels like he's being held. The first time it worked for 5 minutes, then for 15 and then for an hour or so until he woke up hungry. Might work for you guys also?

That's what do, except she has not had sleeping issues, she will sleep wherever. I swaddle her and put 2 receiving blankets on her sides to keep her from rolling. She will sleep for longer stretches when swaddled.

  • With DD we swaddled her in a bassinet next to our bed. We had a sound machine with a light that she would sleep to. She is 18 months now and that sound machine and light still has to be turned on. It also has to be on a certain sound otherwise she won't sleep well. We will see what this little one likes.

Both of these and I've also read that a dirty shirt that smells like mom as a "sheet" helps. I really liked this article: https://www.bellybelly.com.au/baby-sleep/why-do-babies-wake-up-when-you-try-to-put-them-down

  • Mine sleeps in a RNP right next to me.

  • Our baby sleeps swaddled in a RNP next to our bed right now. We asked our pediatrician if this was ok. She said she didn't have a problem with it; however, that varies from ped to ped. He loves the vibrations which concerns me a little bc we hope to transition him to his crib around 3 months (where there will be no movement!).

Was the baby on the couch with you? FYI, I'm pretty sure that's considered one of the most dangerous cosleeping arrangements. I'm not saying cosleeping is awful or anything, but it's worth looking into best practices to make sure that you're doing it in the safest way possible. (If I'm misunderstanding you, then sorry, forget this post :) )
  • We have both the RNP and PNP in our bedroom. Our routine so far has been to put him down swaddled in the PNP for the bulk of the night, until after the last feeding which has fallen anywhere from between 5 to 6. Then he goes in the RNP for the latter part of the morning where he typically stays while I sleep another hour or so, shower, and make the bed and stuff. He sleeps ok in both. I'm admittedly more nervous about the rock n play just bc it isn't technically the safest recommendation for sleeping. As far as the safety of the pack n play bassinet, it is my understanding that this is perfectly fine and advisable by peds.

  • FTM here, quick question has anyone fell asleep with their LO while breast feeding then before bedtime? I find I do that a lot, we usually sleep end up sleeping for 3-4 hours sometimes.
  • With DD she slept in a moses basket mounted on a rocker for the first 12 weeks or so.  It's flat and can be rocked easily with one arm.  I found myself rocking it in my sleep.  It's safe because it's flat.  We would put her down swaddled and I would rock with one hand.  Of course I gave the moses basket away when DD was 2 and am now in need of something!  I considered the RnP, but after reading this thread, but just go out and buy another moses basket.  But I want to wait and see what type of baby I have.  DD cried every time you put her down unless there was white noise, swaddling, and rocking.  I will definitely but the moses basket again if this baby is anything like my first.

  • My baby loves the RNP this is the first thread I've heard anything negative about it/not recommended! We use the vibrations but I try to turn it off from time to time and she will sleep both ways but I think it's awesome and haven't had any thoughts of her suffocating from anything in it.
  • We've pretty much caved and have used the RNP the last three nights. I'd still prefer him to sleep elsewhere but it's such a battle and I just don't have the energy.

Our girls are in the Rock n Plays as well. Claire has some issues with feedings and needs to be on an incline. We had a scare when she was on her back this past week and she choked on her vomit. Luckily, I was right there.

Our LO is currently in RNP but After reading thing thread, hubby and I bought a PNP new for $190. I didn't realize RNP was not technically safe.
I just found a PNP at once upon a child and it was $70. I'm totally thinking about returning the new one (it's not open yet) and saving some money...
  • It seems the RNP is every Mom's dirty little secret. Everyone I know swears by it but admits they're aware it's "not the best thing" but hey, you do what works. It's survival mode for us here!
@katiebranz that seems like a lot of money for a PNP! I would def return it if you found one cheaper. Heck, I think the one we registered for and were gifted was like $120... And I know I've seen the basic one (one we have) at some places for under $100.

  • @babykoz214 I should let you know that most of it was gift cards, we only paid about $40. Because of that, we opted for the more amped up one.

I'm secretly afraid of trying to get her out of the RNP, but is rather fight that battle now than when she's older and we try the crib.
