Am I just being crazy?

So my doctor doesn't do papsmears on girls under 21 and I am under 21 so she has not one time looked down there. I don't think there's anything wrong, I just feel like she should still just check it out to make sure there is nothing wrong. This could just be me, I'm always freaking out about something, but do you ladies think she should at least just look to make things are operating normally?

Re: Am I just being crazy?

  • I was 19 yrs old when I had my first child & my doctor always checked down there to make sure everything was fine. Being under 21 shouldn't have anything to do with it. I'm now 22 pregnant with my second, my doctor will check down there from time to time but I agree with you. She should definitely be checking down there to make sure everything is good.

  • I was dx with adenocarcinoma of the cervix at 20 thanks to a few abnormal pap smears that ultimately led to them doing a LEEP procedure where they finally found the tiny tumor. If I hadn't had those paps when I was 18 and 19 the cancer could have been MUCH worse but thanks to early detection they caught it at stage 1a1, literally the earliest they could catch it and it was rectified with a surgery. I am a HUGE advocate for knowing your body and for precautionary measures.

  • I had my first pap when I was 19, I wonder what their reasoning is.
  • They say it's cause our bodies are still growing and forming and that it will come back abnormal because of this and they don't want to freak me out or freak them out. She says if she's just constantly poking and messing around then then things will go weong. I had one done when I first turned 18 and they did find a lot of abnormalities but I also did have a lot going on at the time.
  • They usually do a Pap smear & once it's negative you don't get another one for two or three years. My first Pap smear was when I was 16, when I turned 17 this what the doctors had told my mom & I. The next time I had one was right before I found out that I was pregnant with my first child. I also would like to know the reasoning behind it, I still think they should check down there you never know what could be going on. Just to be on the safe side & it's always safe than sorry.
  • That's crazy to me. I got my first as soon as I became sexually active. (under 18)

  • That's really weird to me. I actually just spoke to my OB/GYN about when my oldest should have her first exam, about the Gaurdisil shot, and birth control. She said after her first three periods of they are awful to bring her in for an exam, and we can explore birth control options to keep it under control (I'm afraid she will be like me with heavy, painful periods). She said that will include a full on exam no matter what her age. What your doctor is saying makes no sense to me. Between my first pap being at 16, friends that had them done around that age, and my doctors advice for my daughter it doesn't sound like a legit reason.
  • Sounds crazy to me too. I started having them when I because sexualy active around 16.
  • I'm under 21 as well. My doctor does not perform a pap smear, but I have still had a pelvic exam.

Also, they have changed the recommendations on pap smears. At one time is was 16, then 18, and now its 21. Which I've been told by multiple doctors.
  • I have been having pelvic exams and pap smears annually since my ladytime started when I was 13, so this seems super weird to me. I also had/have endometriosis and had been on BC since I was 14 (even though I didn't become sexually active until much, much later...I'm a prude) to help control it, so that may have been a contributing factor for me.
  • My obgyn has been calling me every two years since I was probably 16 to get a pap.
They make me an appointment just for it.

  • Hmm I think at my next appointment in two weeks I will ask her to take a peek. I've had some crazy stuff go on down there since I was 17. At one point they wanted to do a colposcopy where they biopsy my cervix but the same dr wanted to hold off until I was 21 for the same reason. I definitely don't want to be 30 something weeks the first time she looks at it and find something wrong.
  • It's part of a regular pregnancy to get a pap, regardless of age I thought. I would get a new dr.
  • I started having paps done as soon as I was sexually active. Had it done annually until they changed the guidelines, now every 3 years. They still do a pelvic exam annually. I'm not scheduled to have a pap during pregnancy, but my OB said it would be done during one of my follow up appointments.
  • Yes....that is very odd. I started my period at 13 and then by 15 had a period for almost two mths. At that time my mum took me in for birth control and have been having paps done since then. I understand abnormalities, but surely they have been doing there job enough to understand if abnormalities are just abnormal or something seriously wrong. I agree with a PP, I myself would get a different doctor. As a patient if you ask for a certain thing to be done they shouldnt deny you. After all your paying for it and wanting to know whats going on with your body. I recently had a pap a month before finding out I was pregnant in Nov. My ob/gyn didnt do another one, but he atleast went in and check the size of my uterus and make sure everything else seemed fine.
  • In the UK they don't give you a smear while you're pregnant. I'm due a check after having lletz for abnormalities and have to wait until after the baby grrr.
