Inclement weather, WWYD

Hello! I am mostly a lurker but in a bind and not sure exactly what to do. I'm 40w tomorrow and have an appt for a membrane sweep at 4pm. I'm hoping for a natural birth without induction but my Dr. seems anxious to induce and wanted me to come in tomorrow night if the sweep doesn't do anything. After thinking about it and discussing it with my husband, I'm pretty sure I would regret an induction at 40 weeks and would prefer to wait till atleast 41. With DD I was induced at 39weeks due to bp concerns and had a terrible experience. After 3 epidural attempts I was deemed not a good candidate for one and later had spinal headaches, and also hemmoraged pretty bad after she was born. Sooo... The problem is I live near Atlanta where we are not prepared to handle snow and they are predicting a pretty good winter storm rolling in tomorrow afternoon and evening. I've had prodromal labor every night for the last week and now scared if I don't go in tomorrow she will come and I won't make it to the hospital. With my previous experience of hemmoraging this terrifies me. WWYD?

    I think some hospitals will let you come in early in case of inclement weather, space permitting. I'd call labor and delivery at my hospital and possibly talk to my ob about staying the night at the hospital and discuss options at the very least.

    I'm in that area too. While I already had my LO two weeks ago, I just say to stay safe and if you have to travel be careful and allow for plenty of time. I'm sorry I don't have other advice.

    Thank you ladies, doing everything I can think of to encourage her to come tonight lol. Luckily I'm not that far from my hospital just don't want to induce without a medical reason and also not have a baby in my car ;)

    I used to live in ATL and actually got stuck on the highway during the ice storm that shut the city down last year- scared me to death. I'd still err on the side of caution b/c of that experience. Call your OB and L&D to see what your options are for arriving early and also see if you can hold off on induction if you really want to. As PP said, you don't want to be rushing around during bad weather in case you do go into labor and are unable to get to hospital. Good luck!

    I wouldn't get an induction because of weather concerns. If it snows when I go into labor, then my DH will just have to drive in the snow (but I live in New England and we're used to the snow, plus they treat the roads pretty well with plowing and salting as a rule, so it's hard for me to know what it would be like to be from Georgia and trying to drive in a storm).

    If you're really worried about making it to the hospital if you happen to go into labor, would it be possible to stay in a hotel very near to the hospital during the storm? That way, you wouldn't need to get an induction but you wouldn't have to worry about driving any distance in the snow. 

    If you and baby are healthy and doing well (ex. no pre-e, good levels of amniotic fluid, good heart tones, etc.), I think it's best to avoid induction before 42 weeks. Make sure that you research inductions and feel comfortable that an induction is needed before agreeing to one. OBs can be really impatient, and in my opinion (though I'm no doctor) it is in the best interest of both you and your LO to go into labor spontaneously if possible. Unfortunately, OBs don't always practice evidence based medicine, so we have to educate and advocate for ourselves.
