Gallbladder problems while pregnant?

For the past few days I've been having this pain on the upper right side of my stomach, right below my ribs, and it also extends to the right side of my back, on the right side of my back ribs. And I have awful heartburn. I have my anatomy scan today, and I'm planing on asking the doctor if this is something to worry about, but in the mean time, does anyone know if this could be a sign of gallbladder problems? Even though I am thin and eat healthy and get daily exercise, gallbladder problems do run in my family. Any comments are appreciated.

During my last pregnancy I began having intense pain in the same area. They did an ultrasound of my liver and gallbladder that is when they found out I had gallstones. Since I was pregnant they recommend I watch my diet and they prescribed Zofran and nexium. Your pregnancy hormones rising can also create gallstones. I would talk to your doctor about it!

  • I had Gallbladder attacks throughout my first pregnancy...didn't affect the pregnancy at all. I just had my gallbladder removed in June after years of attacks...so much better now. They said my gallbladder was almost a solid mass of stones.
  • I had a gallbladder attack when I was 21 weeks pregnant with my daughter. Worst pain of my life. After an ultrasound they found my gallbladder was just filled with stones. A few days later I was in surgery having it removed.

  • I had gallbladder stones when i was pregnant with my first baby. I had similar symptoms as you mentioned my doc would just say its gas or heart burn pretty normal in pregnancys!!! Um nope! When your up cryi ng because of the pain its not normal. 5 days after i had my daughter i got the worst attack of all. I needed to go into surgery asap!!! It was risky because i was very anemic no surgens wanted to take the risk. Until the third. My gallbladder erupted during surgery. If your having a concern and it runs in your family dont doubt it. Get it checked out for your health and your baby.
  • I had my first and only severe gallbladder attack a few weeks ago at 14 weeks pregnant. Severe pain right under my right breast that radiated throughout my chest/abdomen/back. Ended up in emergency room. They did an ultrasound and found stones and that my gallbladder was inflamed. They were hesitant to remove it since I was 14 weeks pregnant so they admitted me, took me off food completely for two days and the pain went away. They said ok you should be able to manage the rest of the pregnancy with a low fat diet. Then they put me back on food and the pain started up right away, so after being in the hospital for three days they decided to do emergency surgery that night! It was one of the scariest things I've ever gone through and all they kept saying to me was that there was a chance of miscarriage and since we hadn't reached viability yet, there was nothing they could do if it happened. But I didn't have much choice in the matter. Luckily the surgery went well and the baby did well through it, I'm now almost 18 weeks and the incisions are healing well but the first couple weeks were rough trying to eat again! FX for you, whatever the outcome. Ultimately the dr told me that if I was going to have a healthy pregnancy that I needed to be healthy and that's pretty much all it comes down to.

  • Thanks for your input girls!
  • I'm currently dealing with this. It's horrible and constant. I had bloodwork done and it came back normal, but I'm hoping they'll still do an ultrasound. There's no way this pain could be anything other than gallbladder.
  • I am going through this now at 26 weeks pregnant. The pain is intense and I'm afraid to eat anything! I cut out dairy and trying to do low fat (not no fat). But, as I introduce food back in, I'm scared for night time and waking up with "that pain." Went to the hospital with one attack last week that lasted 4+ hours. Had a few mini attacks a few days later. Now I'm just uncomfortable and sore, always. Just hoping I get through the next 3 months and I'll deal with this stupid gallbladder after...good luck ladies! I feel your pain...literally!
