Is anyone getting sick from their prenatal vitamins ?

currently I am taking a prenatal vitamin prescribed by my OB, but it has a stool softener in it. I believe the stool softener is what is making me feel sick, because after I take the prenatal within 30 min to an hour later I'm nauseous and cramping. Is anyone else having this problem? Has anyone been prescribed a prenatal without a stool softener? Thanks!

  • Is there some reason you need it prescribed by your ob? There are a ton of over the counter brands you could try out to see if any work for you.

  • I think my OB was steering me away from the over the counter for a couple of reasons. One being that I'm a vegetarian and I was asking questions specifically about the dha. I will ask the OB when I go for my next appt. I was just curious what other people had been taking.
  • I was getting sick from the prenatal vitamins but then I started and a yogurt and a few crackers after I took the pill and now I haven't even been getting sick . ;)

  • I tried several brands and ended up throwing them all up until I settled on just a generic Riteaid brand prenatal with folic acid.

  • I'll have to try taking it at different times of day. I started taking it at night hoping that would help. I'll try eating and then taking it. I was finding that if I took it with dairy it helped, but of course the instructions say don't take with dairy. It has something to do with interfering with the way your body absorbs iron I believe.
  • My close friend gets terrible vertigo from most vitamins (something to do with cobalt in vitamin B12) she was only able to take Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal. It's a plant based vitamin that's 100% veg. Also has ginger in it to ease morning sickness. It's definitely on the pricey side, but could be worth a try
  • Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I will definitely try some different vitamins and some of the suggestions you all have had so far
  • just fyi the rainbow light one a day are gluten free and vegan. they include some ginger which i think eases the discomfort. i also take the separate dha supplement...it is gluten free and sustainably sourced but NOT vegetarian. hope that helps :)

  • I also have a Rx prenatal and I was told to take it right before bed because it can cause some nausea. The idea was if you are asleep, the nausea won't bother you. But if you have really bad intestinal troubles are that cause you to wake up from it, then I guess that wouldn't help. Not sure if you've tried taking it right before you fall asleep, but that's my idea :) Good luck!
  • Lydiapick it's funny you should mentioned the prenatal vitamin waking me up, because that's exactly what happened last night. I have been taking it before bed, but after last night I just want to try a different vitamin altogether.
  • I take mine at night right before I go to sleep so it won't affect me.
  • I don't have it in my prenatal vitamin, but stool softeners do not agree with me at all. Also, not EVERY pregnant woman is constipated so I would be annoyed with taking it if I didn't need to.
I take a gummy prenatal during the morning sickness period and then similac prenatal after that. I only take the pills with dinner because I need a few meals in me so I won't get nauseous.
  • I take my PNV at bedtime to avoid the fish burps mostly... which I just learned putting your DHA pill in the freezer will eliminate the fish taste/burp (random, but wanted to share).

  • I always got sick from the regular Prenatal vitamins when I was pregnant with my son so this time around I went with the gummies. They are great.
  • I tried a few different prenat tablets but couldn't stomach them! The only ones take don't make me feel horrible are the gummies.
  • Try eating a small meal, and drinking 8 oz of water with it ! That's what I have to do or I get sick with them also !
  • I tend to get nauseous from regular multivitamins so I generally take the gummies as well. I wonder why those don't seem to bother everyone as much.
  • I found that the vitamin I was taking had fish oil (nature's bounty) - which I could never stomach regardless if I was pregnant or not.  I switched to the two step Centrum with a regular multivitamin and DHA and have improved 100% -
  • With both of my daughters I could only tolerate my vitamin if I took it right at bed time to sleep through the nausea
  • I take the rainbow light pnv as well and I'm good with them. They are horse pills though that may end up being a problem on some days when nausea might be bad. Bonus they make me poop on the regular. :)
  • I could never stomach the prenatals my ob prescribed me. So this time I bought otc prenatals which are gummy. They are called vita fusion prenatal. Where I bought them, they cost no more than $15 at Walgreens. So I take those and iron pills at night.
  • I've been taking the gummies every morning since we found out i was pregnant(about 2 weeks), I'm been nauseous but never thrown up. They've also made me extremely constipated and uncomfortable. I've stopped taking them for the past two days and my nausea has gone away. I want to continue them but i don't want all these annoying side effects!
  • I take the Vita Fusion gummy prenatal with DHA but I want to take another DHA supplement since my prenatal doesn't have a large amount of it.  What brand DHA supplement are any of you ladies taking?  I asked a pharmacist about it and he said I could just take the 1000mg fish oil pill but I wasn't sure about doing that.  I tried calling my OB office but they are closed due to the snowy weather we are having in NC.  I just want to make sure that I am getting enough of the supplement; I'm sure I did good this week since I had some salmon.
