Chubby Girl Problems

I'm a first time mom (and first time poster) 17 weeks in, and although the doctor says everything is moving along swimmingly, I haven't really seen much of a bump, nor am I really feeling anything at all. I'm starting to get worried that I'll never actually look pregnant since I'm a pretty thick set woman (size 16/18) and though I've been in maternity clothes for a week or so for comfort purposes, I don't really feel that I look different at all. Being a chubby girl all my life, I kind of figured it would take a while for me to noticeably show, but the fact that I can't really feel much movement or see much of a difference in my appearance has me concerned nonetheless. Anyone have any advice or stories to ease my mind a bit?

just remember that everyone is different! i feel like i am in the same boat as you, as far as the whole not feeling/looking pregnant thing goes. prepregnancy i am about the same size as a good friend of mine (6/8), and we're due 5 days apart from each other with our first babies. she popped super early and has looked pregnant since probably the 15 week mark, and at 19 weeks all i have this tiny little belly that, to the untrained eye, just looks like some pudge. she's also been feeling movement and i'm not feeling much that i am confident is baby. i know it's hard not to compare yourself to others, but it really just is that everyone is different.

try not to stress! according to my OB, as a ftm you're likely not to show until week 20 or beyond, regardless of body size, and you may not feel movement until 22 weeks or so. as long as you're taking care of yourself (eating healthy, exercising a little, taking your prenatal), you and your LO should be just fine. :) happy thoughts; happy thoughts!

  • I just went to my 20-week scan yesterday (at 20 weeks, 5 days), convinced I hadn't felt the baby move yet. While we were watching the monitor, I saw the baby move and felt it, and I realized that what I've been mistaking for gas bubbles, heart murmurs, or my own heartbeat has been Baby all along! And the sonographer told me that once you begin to really feel baby, you'll realize that you've felt it for a long time.

As for not showing, I don't have much advice, but I'm beginning to believe it has a lot to do with the length of your torso than anything. If you're short-waisted, you'll probably start to show early (because Baby doesn't have anywhere else to go but out), but if you have a long torso, you won't "pop" for a while.

It's normal to feel like you're not really pregnant (I struggled with this a lot), but you totally are!

  • Some women don't feel baby move until after the 20 week mark. Also, fluffy women tend to feel baby later, because you know we're fluffy!

Everyone is different when they pop as well. Some women never even look pregnant! My cousin is 7 months pregnant, with a flat belly! Well maybe a tiny bump, but nothing more then that. I wouldn't worry much if I were you. With my first I didn't pop until after 25 weeks. Like I said everyone is different
  • I hear you on the waiting to *look* pregnant. All my chub is pushed up and out but I still just look fat not pregnant. However I can feel my bump but not everyone can feel right away.

I've felt baby move since 16 weeks and I was a size 22 at Conception but I was lucky. everyone is different I know someone who is really small and didn't start feeling till 19 20 weeks. It all depends on your body and baby.
  • It's not unusual to still not show at 17 weeks. I'm a size 4 and didn't show until week 19/20. I know a person's pre weight will have an effect, but it's not a determining factor on when you begin showing.

I have read that smaller people feel movement sooner, but I know little else on that. I first felt flutters mid 17 weeks.
  • I'm a bigger girl, size 14. I have not felt movement and I know that can be because of extra weight. I am obviously pregnant and showing but I think it's because I'm so short (5ft 2in). Try not to worry, soon enough you will have a bump ;)
  • Don't worry about anything, every pregnancy and person is different. My sister in law was telling me that she didn't start showing until 26 weeks. As long as the baby is moving in the ultra sound you should be fine. I am 18w and started feeling "butterfly" movements every now and then at 12w and I am a ftm. But like I said everyone its different!
  • I'm a size 14. I'm 17w5d and dh and myself can definitely tell I'm pregnant, but i think that to others i just look fat. What has helped me is the weekly picture i take (while wearing the same outfit). I think it's hard to see the difference looking in the mirror everyday, but weekly pics help put it all in perspective for me.
  • I believe there's a belly shaper that will help you appear more pregnant. I suggest wearing baby-doll tops. I'm a size 12/14 now, STM and feel like I've ballooned in the belly area.

I also ordered a fetal Doppler to assure more this girl is just lazy. I'm not sure it'll work, but it was only $18...

  • No worries! I'm chubby as well and with my first I didn't really show till my 7th month.. Then bam! I was a whale. On my 3rd and I always get what I call a double bubble. I have a bump below my belly button, and then a bump above, lol. Just hang in there, and if you never get all that big, be glad. Less stretch marks, and less weigh to lose.
  • With my first, I wasn't noticeably pregnant to strangers until about 27 weeks. Now at 18 weeks, DH and I can tell but otherwise I just look fat. I think I started feeling some slight flutters this week but not completely convinced.

  • I was a 14/16 prior to baby and am now 19 weeks. Some mornings I can wake up and almost have a flattened tummy! My MW says that because baby has so much room, he/she can lay towards your back or really low in your pelvis. It's hard for me to see a difference but friends and family can! And I'm starting to need bigger clothes! I've always heard that it's different with your first too!
  • I am a big girl and a FTM as well... I am 22 weeks, and I just started feeling the baby move... i think lol I am not always sure. But I know exactly how you feel. My skinny friend is pregnant and she can see her bumb, I am so envious. But a couple weeks ago I got that line that goes from your belly button to your down stairs. I got so excited! I could see that I was pregnant!! I don't know if this helps you but it definitely made my day... :)
  • The baby center has a club called plus sized and pregnant. Check it out:) its given me a glimmer of hope:)
  • Don't worry mama, I'm sure everything is fine. I'm a chubby plus size and almost 19 weeks with my second. I thought I would "pop" a lot earlier being it was number 2. And the fact that I got a huge prego belly with my first son. Nope. Just feel fat! Hoping the belly bump will show soon. Now I have felt our gummy boy move. It feels like fish swimming in my tummy. And trust me by the end you'll be begging your lo to stop moving so much because your ribs and everything will hurt. Lol
  • I have a definite bump, with twins, but haven't felt anything yet at 18w3d. I went for 3d ultrasound Wednesday and found out I have 2 anterior placenta's, which explains the not feeling movement yet. It was also impossible to get any 3d images because they babies were each snuggled up with their faces in their placenta's! Lol... Did find out we are having 2 boys! Praying for healthy little bundles for everyone!
  • My lily just fell out of my belly like 2 weeks ago (I'm 21 weeks with my 3rd girl) and I'm starting to get really big! As u always do. It takes awhile to show but then, boom!
  • As *i always do!
