3rd Trimester

Large red blood cells

Hello all,

I passed my glucose test which is good news, but my Dr. said that I have large red blood cells. He said that this could be due to pregnancy progressing as in earlier trimesters this was not the case. I have put in a message to him asking for clarification, but I'm wondering if any of you have gotten the same information, and if so what your dr. has told you about it and if they have given you steps to make them go back to normal size.

Background: I have read that it could be due to vitamin B12 deficiency, which is common among people  who have Crohns disease, which I do. I eat a VERY healthy diet and get plenty of leafy green veggies, protein and fruits, so Im curious to see if anemia is the issue here.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Large red blood cells

  • I have a B12 deficiency and cannot absorb the vitamin via food or pills; I require monthly injections. With this type of anemia (pernicious anemia) your red blood cells will become enlarged and fewer of them in general because they have a difficult time transporting the oxygen throughout your body. Idk if your test results reflect anything pregnancy related, I can only speak to Pernicious Anemia. Good luck!
