Ultrasounds - when?

I have my first prenatal tomorrow with an OB consultant (not the doctor - I see her two weeks after), at 6w3d. Reading over the literature on my OB's website, it looks like they do a doppler to listen for a heartbeat between 10-12 weeks. The only other mention of an ultrasound is at 20 weeks. Of course, I will ask tomorrow at the appointment, but browsing here, it sounds like a lot of you are getting early ultrasounds. Wondering what the standard is. Thanks!

Re: Ultrasounds - when?

  • My office gives first appointments at 8 weeks (no sooner) and the ultrasound that following week. Then at around 12 weeks I get the ultrasound that goes along with the blood work testing for abnormalities and then the 20 week ultrasound. I get to hear the heartbeat at every appt. I think you can hear it starting around 12 weeks.

  • I think it depends on your OB. I had mine at 5 weeks 6 days... Bc of my previous issues.
  • Like pp said it varies. I had my first appointment at 7 weeks 4 days and will have a sonogram at 9 weeks
  • If you are high risk you usually get seen earlier and have more bloodwork and more ultrasounds. Low risk pregnancies don't need to be monitored all that closely, if you don't have a lot of appts consider yourself lucky! I know how you feel though, I just want to see little blueberry in there but I probably won't get to for a while.

  • I think it really depends on your history. If you've had no fertility/pregnancy problems before usually it's just the standard 2 scans (In New Zealand anyway and you can opt out of them).

However if you've been getting help with fertility or had previous loss you're more likely to get scans to make sure everything is ticking along nicely :)

I have had multiple loss and depending on who I'm seeing I either request or get given a scan every 2 weeks from 6 weeks until week 12.

With my successful pregnancy as well as the above I also hemorrhaged during the 2nd trimester so had to have scans for that as well.

  • It's common in my OB's practice to only do 1 u/s around 20 weeks for a normal, healthy pregnancy. From what I understand, the fewer the better. I usually have 2 total because of my irregular periods, so I have a dating u/s in the first trimester, then the normal u/s around 20 weeks.

  • This is my 2nd pregnancy (first lost in October at 6w0d) OB did first Appt between 10-12 weeks with heartbeat it's sono at 16weeks for this pregnancy.
  • We had a scan at 6w3d and saw the little peanut and its heartbeat flickering as it should. Have had multiple mc's before and this is the furthest along we have got so we are excited but nervous at the same time. We have a scan at 8 weeks and again at 12 for dating and tests. We're in the UK.
  • I have had 2 ultrasounds and my 3rd is in 2 days. Not high risk. 6w6d

My OB does a transvaginal ultrasound at the first appointment (8-12 weeks). Anything between then and the 20 week anatomy scan is voluntary, like checking for abnormalities. I opt out of these because it wouldn't affect my decision to keep or terminate my pregnancy. At 20 weeks they complete the anatomy scan. Closer to delivery day, they do one more ultrasound to check baby's position. So, that's 3 ultrasounds total. ETA: the fact that I can't count...
  • My first appoint was orginally the 25 of Febuary (6weeks 6days) but they doctor recalled and scheduled it for March 3 (7weeks 5days) because she'll be out of town and we get an ultrasound that day too! <3
  • For my last pregnancy I had an 8wk, 12wk, and 18wk, then a few more due to a minor complication. Those three are the "norm" at the practice I go to.
  • I am having one at 8w5d. They scheduled it with my first ob appt. I am very exited to see our little one!
  • Thanks for the replies. I had my first visit today with the OB coordinator, and we scheduled the first sonogram for next week!! She said the insurance wants them to wait until 18-20 weeks, but in her words "that is forever away, and we need to make sure there's only one in there!" All they needed was a medical reason, so she wrote down "cramping" in my chart (even though I've only had very minor pains).

Whatever works, I guess! I can't imagine having to wait the full 18-20 weeks.
  • I have to wait til 12 weeks to get my first scan:)
  • I'm waiting until 12 weeks with this pregnancy die to insurance issues no history of any concerns with precious pregnancies so I am comfortable with that. I am switching docs though so I'm not sure what will follow.y previous doc usually did 3, one each trimester. I ended up with about 6 per pregnancy due to breech and IUGR at the end of each of my previous pregnancies.

  • I would just call your OB.  I read this board and got really confused at what to expect because it was so different for everyone.  I decided to just call.  They had scheduled me at 6 weeks, but I have no medical issues and this is my first pregnancy.  I asked about it and they said they always schedule at 6-8 weeks, but the doctor will be out of town the two weeks after.  I am the most impatient person in the world so I was totally okay with that.  :-)  Anyway, when I called the other day they let me know that I would get a urine test and probably an ultrasound.  This made me feel better just knowing and I was able to tell my husband.  I had asked him to get someone to cover work after the appointment, so if there was no ultrasound that did not seem as necessary.  He should make the whole appointment, but I am just worried in case we get in late or it runs long.

  • 1st appt, and then about 1/2 way through pregnancy. If there are issues or concerns of drs, they may do more than that.
  • My OB office will have you schedule two appointments when you call.  The first one is with the nurse educator around 7-10wks (I will be 7wks) and they will do an ultrasound that day, so they want you to clear about 1-2hrs for the appt.  The following week I will see the doctor and he will do a physical exam.  I was so excited to make these appts. yesterday!
