Baby Shower Books instead of Card

Going to baby shower next week and the invite states to bring a book instead of card, what are good books for babies for baby showers?

Book names would be nice.

Ugh I hate when people dictate how you spend you money. I would personally bring a card and ignore the demands but if you're ok with it I love Oh the Places you Will Go by Dr Suess. It's a beautifully sweet book.

If youre going to do this idea, id save it til their first or second birthday. You really cant gaurentee that people will follow too, a lot of books are more expensive than just grabbing a card. When i was growing up i LOVED the Shel Silverstein books!

I work at a school and it's pretty standard there to do this at every shower. I received about 40 books. My LO really loves one called "Whose Spots?" He also likes "Brown Cow Brown Cow What Do You See?"

ok Thanks! I'm just not sure what kind of books are appropriate for a baby, but I guess it will be used when the baby gets older too...I got some Dr. Suess books...A couple from Target, they were $5 each. But I did think that was quite rude too also along with the diaper raffle....

I have been to a few showers that request this- I have gotten little golden books on amazon for about $3.00 each. Plus I have free 2 day shipping through prime so even better. One friend I knew loved Beauty and the Beast, so that is the book I got, and the other friend was doing a hot rod/truck themed nursery so I found a cute book about monster trucks. So maybe if there is a theme for the nursery you can get a book that relates?

One of my son's favorite books is "On the Night You Were Born" by Nancy Tillman. It's available at Barnes and Noble for about $8

Just a thought in the book instead of a card thing . . . While I think it's a little obnoxious to be told what to bring as a gift, many cards these days are $4-$5, sometimes even more. I make cards, but I'd rather give someone an inexpensive book than spend money on something that'll probably get thrown away.

Probably too expensive (new at least) for an additional shower gift, but I love the "Llama Llama" books. I get them for my nephew a lot.

I dislike this trend the most not because I'm being told what to buy (pretty annoying by itself) but I also feel like there will be several people who buys the same book and that's just embarrassing/annoying.

I really love Runaway Bunny, Each Peach, Pear, Plumb, and if it's a girl the Angelina Ballerina books.

I like the Little Golden Books. Even though it's tacky to request specific things I don't mind this because if I buy the above mentioned books it's usually cheaper than the Papyrus cards I really like. I buy books in leiu of cards even when not requested. I have all the cards from my son's baby shower because I felt bad about throwing them away. I have no idea what I'll do with them and that was over six years ago. And, if it's possible your book might be a duplicate, you can always write a message on a piece of stationary.

Personally, I LOVE the idea of book instead of card and can't imagine anyone I'm close enough to be invited to my shower being offended. As an adult, I still have the books I had as a child, many with notes and messages written in them. I enjoy reading the messages still to this day. To answer your question, Golden Books are classics and cost about the same as a card.

No, it's not a big deal to spend a few dollars to by a book. However being told how to spend your money in addition to the gift is extremely rude and tacky.

PPs already covered the book instead of a card issue. Since you have decided you are going to get one, here are the ones I like.

On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman (my absolute favourite)
The Crown on Your Head by Nancy Tillman
Wherever You Go, My Love Will Find You by Nancy Tillman
I'd Know You Anywhere My Love by Nancy Tillman (not available in board book [at least not before] so a bit more expensive)

DS's favourite is Night, Night Forest Friends by Annie Bach.

I also love Go the F to Sleep by Adam Mansbach. I think he had another one called You Have to Fing Eat. Never bought it because DS eats like a champ.

Hate this trend but I love the books If I Could Keep You Little by Marianne Richmond and Someday by Alison McGhee. Both are tear jerkers and so sweet.

The principle is the point! It is straight out rude to ask for a gift in addition to your original gift. It's the making your guests feel uncomfortable or like they're being shaken down for all of their loose change rather than being appreciative for a thoughtful gift and their presence that should matter.
If you have no problem saying "you know, your original gift isn't enough so remember to bring a book, diapers, and something for the wishing well! K thanks!", I pity you and your friends and family.

Book showers fail in my opinion - there's always a plethora of duplicates.

*Hey, wait a minute, some of the same ladies commented on my post about how they never return things and love every single Shower gift...and here I was being ridiculed about returning duplicates!*

By the way, it would totally make my day if I ended up with the Adam Mansbach books by the end of this. I may finally break down and buy them myself, since I'll actually have a kid and they will be funnier.

Yeah that's cute and all, but your comment about pitying people over spending a few extra dollars was kind of (really) disgusting.

I do pity you - I pity you because it's so petty. I pity that you waste so much energy denouncing such a silly thing - worrying about "principles"... Buy a book or don't - whatever. I mean have you never been to a bridal shower with a wishing well? You bring a gift and a little trinket for the well. It's the same thing.

I'm not worked up at all- I'm just really glad that I don't have a cheap, defensive, petty friend like you. I'm positive that when it comes time for my baby shower and if my host asks for books- my friends will all bring books and not get hung up on 2-3 dollars.
