Treating back pain while pregnant??

I screwed my back up today leaning over storage tubs of baby clothes. It is killing me now! Can hardly bare standing up/sitting down, walking, anything. Just what I needed! Anyway, anyone have any helpful hints to help the pain? Sure would love a muscle relaxer or at least some advil right about now!! I had to get my hubby to help me change my pants!

Re: Treating back pain while pregnant??

  • I've actually been perscribed a muscle relaxer for insane pain I'm having.. So maybe see your OB if that is something you think would help. I took a warm Epsom bath and that helped a ton. Also some heat or tylenol could possibly help. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I was thinking heat, but wasn't sure if it was allowed. Praying I wake up tomorrow and my back and I are friends again. I have never had back pain like this. Ugh! Thanks for the tips!!! If it stays bad, it is good to know getting prescribed muscle relaxers or something isn't out of the question! I hope your back is feeling better or feels better soon!!!

Ya they say not to use a heating pad for too long but quite honestly I use it for a while because it helps so much and I did with my first pregnancy as well. Maybe try that route first. Thanks!!
  • Ice is actually the best for back pain. I go to a chiro 3x/wk. Ice for 15 minutes nothing for 20 minutes ice for 15 minutes (repeat until you have iced for a total of 1 hour)

  • Ice works best to calm down Inflammation. Also find a good chiropractor! Long time chronic back and neck pain sufferer here.
  • It depends on easy you're most comfortable worth. If your back feels tight then heat may help your muscles relax. Just make sure that you don't get overheated, heart should be on no longer than 15-20 min

Ya I think it depends on the person/type of pain. Ice always just made my muscles tight and made me hurt worse. I've heard alternating helps as well.
  • I've been using a hot and cold pad and do it for only a couple of times a week. I have also been taking warm baths, getting a back rub from the hubby, and been using a yoga ball! I used to have really bad lower back pain to where I couldn't stand, walk, or even sleep comfortably! I still have very little pain but it has gotten so much better!
Good luck and I hope your back gets better :)
  • On any muscle injury you do ice for 24-48 hours then you can start using heat. Once you hit 24-48hrs I would look into a massage preferably medical massage from an LMT who works at a chiropractor (or someone who specializes in prenatal massage). I'm a nurse and I throw my back out from time to time, my sister is a great LMT and I get better days faster once I started letting her work the area. As far as antiinflammatoriea or muscle relaxors Id call the OB...because tylenol sucks and won't help much for your back.
  • I threw my back out this week too, I'm 17 weeks. My friend is a chiropractor and he said to ice for 10 mins every hour and I took a bit of Tylenol to help with the pain. He also said just to try to keep your back a neutral as possible. It was 2 days of laying in bed watching Grey's on Netflix lol....my hubby had to lift me out of bed, I looked like a turtle stuck on my back lol
  • I took it easy last night and today. It was a little better when I woke up this morning. Still definitely hurts, but I can at least move again! My husband had to help me off of the toilet and the couch last night...that was great fun! My mom did recommend ice, but it is so darn cold here that just sounds like complete torture lol. Hoping it will feel even better tomorrow. Fingers crossed...otherwise chasing my toddler around all day with daddy back at work is gonna be hell! Thanks for all of the help ladies! I really appreciate it!
  • Also how do you cure the foul mood that comes with being exhausted from the constant 'grind fire in your tailbone' feeling D: don't wanna go to work today weeh
  • My second pregnancy I kept getting kidney stones and since Tylenol was all I was taking for the pain they had me alternate between heat and ice. But they said however long you'd normally leave it on, cut it in half.

I feel your pain! I have a four year old and chasing her is not fun when my back is out lol....I live in northern ontario it was -36 this morning.....rediculous lol
  • I've been squatting all day at work, and I'll have to be doing a lot more of it. Ugh...I'm only 17 weeks now, and I'm having trouble, so I know it'll only get worse.
