Waking up to eat

Forget about waking up 2-3 times a night to pee, I've also been having to get up and eat most nights. Any other ladies dealing with this? It usually starts with waking up to pee and if I can't fall back to sleep right away total starvation hits! :))

I've found a couple of habits that help-- eating about 200 cals right before I go to sleep, and keeping food on my nightstand like apple slices or half a protein bar. I wonder if this is the deal for the whole pregnancy!

This has been happening to me too, but I can't remember it happening in my previous pregnancies. I'm on progesterone this time and I think that may have something to do with it.

  • I have seriously considered getting up at night to eat. I am so nauseated and dizzy when I wake up and have to eat asap.
  • I literally just posted about this early this morning haha, the midnight hunger pains are brutal. I notice if I eat a high-calorie dinner it's a little better at night, but I still have to at least have one midnight snack. It's rough
  • I did this with my first and honestly think it contributed to gaining 60 lbs with her. I didn't do this my other pregnancies and gained under 30 with each of them. I do keep water on my nightstand and drink that instead of eating anything, to keep something in my stomach. If you can help it is avoid it as it isn't best to digest while sleeping.

  • @WDDCH‌ I can't really say that I agree with that, you're not going to gain more weight just from eating a healthy late night snack. And if your body is begging for food, that means it needs food, and you should feed it. Anyone who tells you not to eat in the middle of the night, probably hasn't felt the intense hunger pains we're feeling. I eat every night in the middle of the night, two or three healthy snacks, and haven't gained a pound. The pain is so intense that it wakes me up and I can't go back to sleep, so my doctor is the one that suggested keeping snacks by my bed and eating at night. I think it's best to listen to your body, and feed it when it's hungry. Take care mamas and hang in there!
  • Yes, I have needed to do this to keep morning sickness under control. Snack before bed then a couple saltines each time I wake up. But there's good news... I needed to do this from weeks 6-9 but once I hit week 9 it was no longer necessary.

  • Woohoo, awesome! I just hit 11 weeks and mine is worse now! Someone suggested on another thread eating more calories and drinking more water during the day, so I'll keep trying little things. I eat and drink plenty so I just have to figure out what works for me.
  • I have not experienced any excessive hunger, I wonder if it's because I already have plenty of fat. My friend was the same way when she was pregnant and she is a very thin girl. If your body is asking for food my guess is you need it, so eat! You are supposed to build a healthy store of maternal fat, about seven pounds. As long as it's not cookies and cheeseburgers it should be fine!
  • @WDDCH‌ I appreciate the advice but have to agree with @mrscaterosales‌ ! I get a bad stomachache and headache that just gets worse and I'm not able to go back to sleep. It's not good for the baby when you are that hungry so even if I end up gaining more weight, oh well! I've gained 4-5 pounds and I'm at 10 weeks. Not great but doing my best.

I wish this was the case for me, @jweber4747‌
Haha, I was just telling my husband yesterday--I already have about 30 pounds to spare, can't my body just use some of that and let me sleep?? I promise, body, I won't let you starve!! I think it's a blood sugar thing. If I eat more during the day and eat enough protein it isn't as bad.
  • I have always been starving when I wake up at night, even before pregnancy. I think my mom is the same. It used to be worse when I was quite slim, but I still get it now when I've put on a bit of weight. I try just to drink a lot of water and hope I fall asleep before I need to pee/hunger sets in again. But on really bad occasions I have something low GI such as an wholemeal oat cracker. This seems to work better than fruit, probably because of the lesser sugar count :)
  • Yes, this has happened to me too, but only a couple of times.  My stomach was hurting so bad, I had no choice but to get up and have some yogurt!  I feel like I am always hungry and thirsty. I eat little snacks all day long between stuffing myself and lunch and dinner.  My snacks tend to consist of fresh or dried fruit and nuts/seeds/coconut flakes or some raw veggies. Sometimes I will save my lunch leftovers and have "second lunch" instead of an afternoon snack.  I still haven't gained any weight though.  I thought I'd gained 3lb last week, but when I stepped on the scale this morning I was back at my normal weight again!  Baby is using a lot of food!!

  • I go to bed starving and wake up starving. But if I eat a snack I end up just throwing it up about 10 minutes later anyways. This nausea and sickness is getting worse and I hate that. I am starving all the time, nothing sounds good, and most everything I eat comes back up anyways. I did eat a piece of bread with peanut butter on it the other night and it stayed down and wasn't as starving as usual. Think I'm going to have to try that again and pray it works the same way.

  • @megleaet‌ I hope that is over for you soon, sounds awful!
  • I have lost 9 pounds already. I can't eat I have major food aversions. So I'm literally starving and what I don't throw up makes me fell a little better. I am only able to consume to around 800 calories a day because almost everything makes me sick so I am starving all the time. I was finally able to eat lunch today and it consisted of a mcchicken and didn't make sick. Then I had a peanut butter and graham cracker and a little lemonade. I'm still starving. I have to start making A snack to take to bed and eat during the night because I wake up sick because I can't eat anything.
  • Every night, when we read or watch a show before turning out the light, I feel such extreme hunger pangs! Even if I've just had a snack right before brushing my teeth! It's a struggle every night to stop eating and sleep! I'm at a very healthy middle weight for my height and I'm getting avout 2100 calories a day, so I usually try to ignore it, drink some water and go to sleep.

Thank you. I go to the dr tomorrow and going to ask if there is something I can do to help it.

  • I wake up and eat raisin bran then pass out!
  • Tight before bed I'm not hungry, however 10 mins after getting in bed, I'm starving. I mean star - ving but I ignore it..especially since the nausea is gone, an, empty stomach is not going to affect me adversely in that way...i would love to just drink water but I'm still struggling with the way it tastes...it's gross!!!!
  • I am hungry every freakin' hour! This is a new development for me as I was sick week 6-9 and am now 10w3d. (I still get sick at night sometimes) But it's so hard to find something to eat every hour! Usually it's small things so that I don't overeat but I can still eat very often...If I don't eat often enough I feel sick!
  • Yes! This is happening to me, too. I try to avoid eating, but can't fall asleep unless I do. I've been eating yogurt...that seems to do the trick.
  • Ugh. I'm doing this and it's crazy annoying. I'm not use to feeding my face every hour. But at the same time, I can only handle small amounts of food-then im full. I have been keeping lemon water and crackers on my night stand. I bust into them every night! LOL It's like a hunger I have never experienced?!?! I have a five minute window of, 'oh I'm hungry' before it switches to,'I'm dying I need food now'.

If it's this bad in week 12, is it just going to keep getting worse as baby grows?? Yikes.
  • @LoveLee85‌ This has been the worst for me! Last night I drank a small protein shake before bed - slept all night without getting up to eat once. For the first time since week 6, I slept the whole night!!!! Try the protein shake, I hope it helps!
  • I keep a granola bar on my night stand for late night snacking.

  • @mrscaterosales‌, I'm going to try the protein shake thing!!! 9wks today and starving all the time. Haven't had morning sickness but the only times I come close are first thing in the morning and that ridiculous hunger hits. I had peanut butter on ritz the other night and that really curbed it in the morning! Good luck ladies!
