Dental Work?!?

This weekend, out of nowhere, a crown in the back of my mouth completely shattered. So now I'm going to have to have dental work! Going to the dentist already makes me nervous, so you can imagine how I'm feeling right now. Especially because we just moved a while back and I have to find a brand new dentist to deal with this.

I know xrays aren't a good idea, but what else should I know? I've sent a message to my OB office, but in case I find a dentist before they get back to me, I want to have a little knowledge under my belt.

Ugh. :(

Re: Dental Work?!?

  • Dental work shouldn't be a problem. I'd skip going under and opt for topical, if they even do general anesthesia for that (I don't know because my dentist doesn't do anesthesia in his office).

I had a crown put on a few months ago and will need to go in here soon for adjustment because my gum is still a little irritated around it. I'm not concerned. And this is coming from a momma who doesn't even take Tylenol and tries to do everything as natural as possible.

When in doubt get peace of mind from your prenatal care provider (OB/midwife) as well as the dentist.

  • I was due to have some work done for a broken tooth last week, both Dr and dentist said its fine, the local anaesthetic doesn't affect baby. As it turned out I've rescuduled because I couldn't deal with anyone poking around my mouth at the moment, gag reflex..

As pp said, speak to the dentist first they know what's safe - there are certain things you shouldn't do like X-rays, general anaesthetic, certain after care painkillers etc.
  • Local anesthesia is fine for you and baby. The biggest thing the avoid is the nitrous oxide (laughing gas).If they absolutely need to get a x-ray make sure they double cover you. One lead apron across your belly and another placed normally. Radiation from dental x-rays are very minimal I wouldn't let them take a whole series but if they need just a single film of that tooth to determine if it's saveable then it will be ok.
