There are two hospitals near me..how do I choose? Is there a good website to look on?

Re: How to choose a hospital. .

  • I have heard that you should meet the staff and take a tour. This is my first tho, so I don't know for sure! Good luck :)

  • Thanks mnturk! Thats what I was thinking its my first too! So much to think about :)
  • I just chose the one with the best maternity ward/facilities. :)
  • Do they both have private recovery rooms? That's pretty much my only concern!
  • In our case, insurance doesn't consider every hospital in our area "in-network", so that greatly impacts where we can go and what doctor we chose.
  • I really wanted the hospital that has a bright, shiny, and had a new maternity wing with all private rooms. Then I spoke to every OB that delivers there and they were horrible. So, now I am going to the older hospital with limited private rooms because the doctor is more important than the room.

  • At the risk of sounding ignorant, when is a good time to tour a hospital? I'm 5w1d, so it's still very early.

  • Your doctor or midwife may only deliver at one hospital. I think it's most important to find someone who's policies are agreeable to you. Most doctors share a call schedule with a group, and there's a good chance you'll be delivered by someone other than your OB, but usually doctors within a practice or group will have similar approaches.

Anyway, figure out what things are important to you: low c-section rate, support for more "natural" unmedicated low-monitoring style births, private rooms, episiotomy policy, breastfeeding support, visitor policy, etc. My hospital offers water births which isn't my thing, but I'm sure it's a requirement for someone. What my hospital does not offer is edible food, but there are takeout places all up and down the street so it's not a dealbreaker for me. Find out which hospital/OB group most closely aligns with your preferences.

  • I chose for personal options like rooms and birthing options from the hospitals that offered the highest level of care for nicu & women so that if it became troublesome we wouldn't need to be transferred. I also chose a bigger hospital so they'd have plenty of blood on hand if need be and wouldn't have to call a blood bank for it.
