3rd Trimester

wrist pain

I've been dealing with wrist pain every night for almost two months, thinking no big deal, it'll go away.  Come to find out there's such thing as pregnancy carpal tunnel syndrome.  This is my 3rd pregnancy & I've never had this or even heard of pregnant women getting it.  The pain is so excruciating and it wakes me up nightly.  Its both sides too!! Anyone else?? Its only at night & I don't type at work very much.

Re: wrist pain

  • Yes this is my 3rd pregnancy too and I had it. I could barely pick up DD or change her diaper. I rested it a lot and wore a hard wrist brace which seemed to help it heal a bit

  • I got it with my last pregnancy and 6 months later it still bothers me on occasion.

  • I've been dealing with wrist pain for the last month or so. Dr said it's pregnancy induced carpal tunnel and had me pick up braces to sleep in. They're annoying but help me function with little pain for the most part, plus tylenol before bed has helped as well. Good luck. Also try letting warm water run on your wrists it helps loosen the muscles and gives a little pain relief.
  • get the splint
  • Yes, very common and it sucks. I haven't had it myself (yet).

There are two different things going on here - in CTS it is an issue with the median nerve in the wrist. Inflammation, increased blood flow, swelling, etc. can aggravate this and all are common later in pregnancy. Then you have the big bonus of a growing uterus putting pressure on nerves in your lower spine that run to your arms and legs. Make sure your drinking plenty of water and exercising to enhance your circulation, but I would really see a chiropractor to see if you can get any relief. Splits/support can help too. You can get them at Walgreens/drug store or through a chiropractor or physical therapist.

  • Get a brace I didn't have it with my DD but this time it started at 3mo.
  • I had it in both my previous pregnancies. It's horrible and painful. It didn't go away after my second pregnancy for about a year after my DD was born. I recommend a brace/splint. It does give you relief, it's not something that will go away straight after birth. So starting to use a brace now will help some what. I'm currently half way through my 3rd pregnacy and I havnt got it yet. Fingers crossed!!
  • Thanks for the help! I have splints.  It does help some but my sleep as decreased as well! LOL

I have it, it's wretched. I feel like I'm wearing gloves of pain all the time. DH squeezes my joints for me, which feels really good.
  • I have the same thing and I am miserable. I have trouble opening bottles and carrying bags.

It's very strange, but I actually get some relief by typing at the computer. It is worst for me at night. The splints do help but I take them off in my sleep....

  • I, too have PCTS.  I've found that its a combination of wrist positioning and all the extra fluid that builds up in my pregnant legs during the day.  It floods my arms at night and helps to pinch the nerves in my wrists and make for some excruciating nights.  I've had advice from an occupational therapist:  While warmth feels good, she suggested icing the wrists as often as possible (up to six times per day) for about 10 minutes.  One session right before bed.  Then, wearing braces AND sleep sitting/elevated so the fluid can't drain up into your upper body.  It's worked relatively well so far.  The elevated sleeping is no fun, and especially if you're a side sleeper it gets kinda wonky and can be fraught with extra hip pain. But, it's better than waking up every hour with numb, throbbing hands.  It seems to help with daytime tingling and numbness as well.
  • I had carpal tunnel before my pregnancy, and it had gotten worse during pregnancy. I wear a wrist splint to bed, it helps so much!
  • I have it in both my left and right wrist/hand. Last night was the first night I wore a brace on both wrists and it made a world of difference! My left hand had no symptoms and my right hand was only a little numb with no pain. :+1:
  • With my daughter I had a wrist brace on both wrist. The pain was so intense I would see stars. So far so good with this pregnancy, I pray it stays that way.
  • I feel your pain...literally.  I was waking up with throbbing hands and wrists in the middle of the night.  The splints work wonders for the pain...but my right hand has been numb for a month now.
    I hope you find relief!
  • I have that too - as much as you can't necessarily control how you sleep try to make sure your hands are not under you.

Also, I asked my massage therapist about it and she said she could help - she worked my hands and lower arms the last 2 times i went and it's worked wonders - maybe something you could try

  • I had this. I started with a cold wrap to get the inflammation down.  It did help with the pain but I needed a little more help. Check out this sites wraps.  They are what I used.  The wrap you plug in is a blood flow stimulator.  Also had my massage therapist do some work on my arm/wrist.  It helped get the blood flowing and decreased the numbness.

  • I have it in both wrists. It's worse at night and in the morning.
  • I get that only if I don't drink enough water, try drinking more and see if it stops.
  • I have it now. Had it with the first and also way before I even got pregnant with the first. This happens specially when you work in a computer. It happens, it comes and goes...

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy too and it's the first time I;d heard if it. I don't have the pain you described, but my hand cramps shut and it takes a minute for me to be able to move it at all. It's worse if I have caffeine or don't drink a lot of water.
