Fact or fiction?

edited February 2015 in September 2015 Moms
What do you ladies think... Is it really so dangerous to, say, move the couch or lift a tote when pregnant? Does anyone have experience of it being harmful?
I avoid lifting when I can, but... Is it really a big issue when I'm alone doing housework? :-/

  • I carry my 35 lb 3 year old on a daily basis, so I say as long as you don't experience any pain, you're good.

  • I lift and do a lot of housework and pickup all my kids under the age of 5 still. It doesn't hurt me so I still do it. If it hurt I would not.

Obviously there's a certain "awareness" in our society that discourages letting a pregnant woman lift things, I guess I had just never heard of it being a real issue for the mothers themselves! There doesn't seem to be any risk in *most* cases, which is nice to hear. :)
I certainly don't want to hurt Baby, and if there is a sad story, it's worth heeding of course! Since there are so many mothers on here, I'm sure to get a good sampling of experiences and advice. (Thank you!)
  • I lift and move 100 pound hay bales and 50 pound feed bags all the time, among other semi strenuos farm chores. Now when I'm sporting a bump there'll have to be some adjustments in how I do things lol, but for now not much has changed.

I asked my doctor and he wasn't concerned. I was kinda hoping he would say no more of that and my husband would have to take over. ;) I also did this on a regular basis prior to being pregnant though so keep that in mind.

If I start to notice a negative impact I will definitely stop. So far it hasn't bothered me, just wears me out more than before.
  • I think it depends on what you are used to.. I can deadlift 160lbs....and my doctor mentioned keeping with my routine but maybe reducing weight by 25% later in pregnancy....but like I said I think it depends on how much you were lifting before....I had someone tell me not to lift more than 20lbs....but for me that's nothing...it's all variable so I would ask your doctor and make sure you are lifting properly and listening to your body.
  • @outdoorsyinoregon‌ I'm in the same boat!! I live/work on a ranch and have always helped out. Hoping my doctor will say it's not heathy to spend 12 hours in a bouncing tractor every day this summer so I don't have help so much with haying lol
  • I'll cross my fingers for you! @smiversen‌
  • It's how you lift , lift correctly with legs etc proper form is what my doc said
  • I was told not to lift anything I would usually fung 'heavy', but if it's a weight I'm used to it'd be fine.
  • I was told that I can do all of my running and strength training that I was doing prior to being pregnant, but to listen to my body and back off when I need to.

  • Interesting. My SO won't even let me pick up the laundry basket and while I appriciate the concern I keep saying I'm pregnant not disabled.
  • I think it just depends on what your used to my doctors went even more strict this time with my over stretching my stomach (like reaching above my head) and not bending down and lifting. I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old so I still lift and carry both of them but I was doing that before pregnancy. I think your body will let you know your limits. Obviously this isn't the time to start cross fit but I know some mom's who did it before and continued through out their whole pregnancy just cut their lifting and stuff as the pregnancy progressed.
