Sushi!

I'm seriously craving sushi. Is all sushi off? I'm going to cry.

Re: Sushi!

  • I think you just have to be careful about the raw stuff. And I'm a big fan of the "just a little bit" school ;)
There are quite a few fancy rolls at my local place that are steamed or tempura that I'll be partaking in.

  • Agree with PP, be careful about the raw stuff. California rolls are usually not raw, those are probably fine, also tempura/cooked rolls. I totally love the stuff too.

  • yeah it's just raw sushi that's dangerous, is my understanding. tho I'm finding I actually have an aversion to California rolls for some reason... thanks, pregnancy! :stuck_out_tongue:
  • I've read that you just need to be careful - many sushi restaurants will use the same knife to cut the raw stuff as they do to prepare the rolls with non-raw ingredients.
  • If youre going to a reputable place that you've been a million times and know their fish doesnt carry bacteria they say its ok to have it. Its only the sickness youd get from eating bad fish that makes it dangerous. Otherwise cooked is great up to 6 ounces twice per week!!
  • I don't think Cali rolls are necessarily safer since they are made by people who probably touched raw fish anyway. I would consider it just as risky...
  • Thanks ladies. I'll talk to my doctor and find out what she has to say about it. It's just no Jimmy Johns no sushi. I'm going to starve here lol.
  • it is not just raw fish that you have to worry about. It is also the mercury content. If you google mercury content in fish it'll show you the ones that are high level and low level that are most commonly found in sushis

  • There's tons of stuff without fish at all too - I loove avocado rolls, kurumi, potsticker rolls - a lot of places are really creative with the vegetarian rolls they offer. I figured stuff like unagi or California rolls are okay too, since they're not raw. As far as mercury goes, here is a super useful link from the American Pregnancy Association that ranks sushi/fish in terms of the mercury content https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy-health/mercury-levels-in-sushi/
    Bon apetit ;)
  • Psssh I eat Jimmy John's. I always eat deli while pregnant, hot or cold. I don't agree with the approach that if there's a .00001% chance of dying because I ate cooked, but cold, sliced chicken that I can't have it. Raw fish or meat, on the other hand, no thanks.

  • I heard that eel and avocado rolls are fine because of the low mercury content and the eel is cooked. Also crab rolls or soft shell crab. I would go to a nicer restaurant if I was to risk it. I definitely hear you.. I have been craving sushi nonstop!!

  • My doc says its completely safe in small doses...Japanese women dont suddenly stop eating sushi when they are preggers! And the amount of mercury is really negligable. Just dont go over the top and you'll be fine!
  • For me personally, I will have california and salmon rolls. There's always avocado rolls. Stay away from grocery store sushi. I bend the rules though. I eat Brie and soft cheeses, will have one glass of wine here and there. Although, I stay away from hotdogs and non-organic fruits etc.
  • Thank you all. It's just tough to crave something and everyone tells you you can't have it.
  • I want salmon sashimi really really badly!! It's the only protein I've been craving and obviously one of the least recommended... Even cooked salmon grosses me out at the moment :/
  • Went for sushi for valentines day. I have read a lot and talked to doctors and as long as you haven't gotten sick from it before you should be fine. I went to a reputable place and had raw fish just kept the salmon sashimi and tuna down to a couple pieces because of the mercury. In Canada and the U.S. They make everything seem bad that people in other countries do all the time and have no problems. Enjoy yourself and let there be sushi!
  • I eat sushi 2 or 3 times a week, its my biggest craving. cooked sushi is okay! i get a california roll and an eel roll (eel is always served cooked) and boston rolls (shrimp, lettuce, cucumber) and like some one said above im a firm believer that everything is okay in moderation so every once in a while ill go for something raw :)
  • My doctor said that even having some of the raw fish is fine. Just to stay away from big fish like Mahi Mahi.
  • I have had sushi once a week for the past 3 weeks. I have been eating the Cooked rolls and staying away from my favorite spicy tuna rolls but ahhh they are so good. The mercury content I feel is silly. I mean look at the size of a sushi roll. The amount of fish in it isn't a whole fish, so I think it's ok. This coming from someone who stays pretty er on the Side of caution. Enjoy.
  • For Valentines Day DH took us to a hibachi place and they had an entire menu of cooked sushi options! I would just investigate your local sushi place and see about cooked options. It was DELICIOUS. Good luck and congratulations!
  • Thank yall so much! I can't wait to eat Sushi again!
  • I've been all about the California rolls since there isn't anything raw in them. I say, Enjoy!
