does the risk miscarriage go down once you see a heartbeat?

Hi everyone!
I had my first altrasound yesterday. Today I am 7 weeks. They were able to find the heartbeat yesterday which has me feeling much better as I have been cramping for the last few weeks (no bleeding). Is it true that the risk of miscarriage decrease when the heart beat is confirmed?

Re: does the risk miscarriage go down once you see a heartbeat?

  • I think a good way to think about it is, the farther along you are, the lower the miscarriage rate is. So, if you see the heartbeat at 6 weeks, you still have a higher miscarriage rate than you would if you saw the heartbeat at 10 weeks. But, both would be very small.

However, if someone has heard something to the contrary, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I really like this website that @CaitLewis15 posted yesterday: https://spacefem.com/pregnant/mc.php?m=01&d=09&y=15

  • I read a bump article (not sure about accuracy but figure it's gotta be pretty good) recently that mentioned the chance of miscarriage goes down to 2% once you see a heartbeat AT 8 weeks.

  • Ps. I measured at 8w1d.
  • I can't say medically but I've heard the heartbeat on both of my miscarriages, the most recent one in September 2014 I heard the heartbeat at 6 weeks and then again at 8 weeks and I miscarried shortly after the 8 week sonogram which was caught at my 11 week check up. Wishing you the best. I'm pregnant again (6w3d) and praying for a sticky bean this time. Trust me no one is like me, I have really bad luck, everything will be great! HH9
  • I believe the risk of miscarriage after hearing a heartbeat at 7 weeks is about 4.2%... either way the odds are in your favor!
  • In all honesty, something can go wrong at any point in the pregnancy, right up to delivery.

That being said, the risk of miscarriage goes way down after 12-13 weeks, and for me, it was definitely reassuring to see a baby and hear a heartbeat at my last appointment (7w, 1d). At this point I know the baby has implanted, started growing, and has a working heart.

  • My girlfriend and her hubby had a similiar situation.  She had her sonogram on Thursday at 8 weeks and started cramping on Friday evening and had miscarried by the following Monday.  I do hear that the chance of miscarriage drops significantly at 12 weeks.

Thank you for saying this, because it's very true.
  • I heard the heartbeat at 6 wks US. Doc said once you hear heart rate 120 or greater, chances of miscarriage are 5% or less. My baby's heartbeat was 117 so he offered for me to come back again next week to listen again (although he says he is not concerned). So going back tomorrow and praying for 120!
  • I think you should take every positive as a good sign :)

I had a miscarriage between my sons. The baby stopped growing at 9 weeks. No matter how good or bad the percentage any thing can happen.

Take one week at a time and smile with every ounce of good news. Every day you carry your baby is a blessing.

  • I Was told when they seen my babie's heartbeat at 7wks that viability was increased by 60% and I miscarried at 8wks. But I was also bleeding/spotting for four weeks. I did not have any cramping either.
