Wedding attire at 36 weeks???

Little brother is getting married in May, and I was supposed to be a bridesmaid. DH and I are no longer standing at the front because the bridal boutique insisted I order a dress by early December, and there is no way to predict what size I would be in May. Does anyone have any recommendations for shops/stores that might sell more elegant maternity wear? I can't find anything other than jersey/knit, and we're still being included in the wedding photos, so I'd at least like to blend with the other girls. I've tried looking for regular maxi dresses also, but can't find anything without a fitted waist :( Would love to hear your thoughts!

  • Nordstroms? You can buy several styles and sizes and return the ones you don't like. Check maternity, bridesmaid and formal dress section. (Macy's also has a good return policy). Or try nordstroms rack, buy a size or two up and get altered.

  • How far along are you now? You can probably make a reasonable estimate to how your body is filling out in pregnancy. I've had to attend 3 weddings while pregnant and have had no issues finding good dresses. None of them have been "maternity" though.

You should be able to go to any bridal store, like David's, and get an empire waist dress a size or two up then have the top part tailored. At 39 weeks I can still fit all of my dresses that don't have a defined waist with no need to size up, as long as they are not too short. I found a lot of nice dresses at Belk in just regular women's section and another great dress at Banana Republic. If I were you, I would just plan to visit all the local boutiques/department stores and buy something off the rack about 1 month before and have the top part tailored (if necessary) a week or two beforehand. I don't think you'll have too much trouble.

  • 21 weeks now, all pre-pregnancy clothes (except pants) still fit. Haven't gained an excess amount of weight, but I can definitely tell that measurements at natural waist  are bigger (and will obviously be bigger at that point!) We have a Nordstrom Rack here, that's a good idea. And since it's prom season, hopefully the department stores will have some good options coming up. The bridesmaid dress is a Bill Levkoff, and he has ONE maternity style (but its really heinous). I was hoping to be able to just order it since the bottom is pretty flowy, but the liner is really fitted, unfortunately.

    Thanks for the tips!

  • I had good luck with https://www.asos.com/Women/Maternity/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=5813&r=2 It is a British company. I ordered three dress( online) and picked the best one. Shipped the others back. It was super easy. Sizing was pretty accurate, but you can always alter the dress if it does'nt fit in May.

  • I'm English, I've got my Auntie's 50th on the 21st Feb and I've had to find a dress too - like PP I recommend asos, they've got a huge maternity selection. I even managed to find a nice red velvet number!

Would it be an option to get the bridesmaid dress and take it to a tailor to have the liner removed? Then you could wear a maternity slip underneath? It depends a lot on the dress but this is one idea depending on how badly you want to be in the matching dress. Removing a liner is usually quite simple.

  • Aso has a great maternity section with lots of dresses
  • Check out the 'mine for nine' website. They have formal maternity wear you can rent for a short amount of time. They have really cute stuff!
  • Try your local consignment/resale shops.  Mine has a section of formal maternity-wear that you can rent or buy.
  • I found a fabulous dress for a wedding at a plus size store! I suggest giving that a try, it wasn't maternity but you'll probably have some luck
