Pap in ealy pregnancy

has anyones OB asked that they come in for a pap before first pregnancy appointment? When I called to tell them I'm pregnant they said "well we start with a pap so let's schedule that first." I'm worried because your cervix is sensitive in early pregnancy and I don't know if it's s good idea to be poking around down there. Part of me is saying "it's your doctor, they know what to do" then there's the other part of me who knows it took us 2 years to get pregnant so I'm being super careful and protective of our little bean.

  • Yes, it is common practice to have a pap at the first visit. I had one at nine weeks. This may vary in some offices.

  • I got one about a week after I convinced, but too early to get a BFP. It all turned out fine for me.

I had one at my first appt for my last pregnancy. It's no big deal.
Have you had one before? It's only a quick little swab for cells. It's not in deep enough to be an issue.

I'd be more annoyed that they're making you come in for an extra appt just for that.
  • I had one on my first visit with dd (I think I was about 6 weeks) and in scheduled for one when I'm about 11 weeks with this one.
  • Had one at my first visit with my son and will have one at my first visit tuesday with this one. It's pretty common protocol but I can understand your worries but they'll take good care of you and your little bean!!

  • Last time my OB said he didn't do papa during pregnancy bc there really wasn't much of a point. Most of my friends around here also didn't have early pregnsncy paps. I'm sure it depends on what's common where you live. Regardless, it's your body & you don't need to do anything . If you're unsure maybe ask what the reason is for the pap. See what the worst case scenario would be & if it effect your pregnancy. Personally, I wouldn't be doing a pap during pregnancy even if my OB offered.
  • @Desiserata13‌ I'm pretty sure they don't do them because you're pregnant. I think they do them if you are due for one when you are coming for that appt. Either way it's just another test to make sure you are healthy for your pregnancy.
  • I had mine in October, so I'm not due for one again till after I deliver

  • Yup it's normal I had one at my first appt with both of my other kids.
  • I had one at my first appointment on Tuesday, which I thought was weird because I just had one in July. It seemed like it's what they did for everyone at the first prenatal visit. I would imagine they are extra concerned about anything going on "down there" so they want to double check.
  • Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear that it's relatively normal. I'm feeling a little better about it now :)
  • I, too, had a pap at my first appointment with this pregnancy.  Just super quick right before my TV ultrasound.

  • I think it's a regional thing whether or not it's automatic. My last pregnancy in the fall the Dr gave me the option and I declined since Id had one in the summer. When I go for my first pre natal on March 2 I will decline again I think.
