Breastfeeding

At 4 months, my supply is almost gone I think :(

I have been supplementing with about 1 bottle of formula a day since 3 wks old, but in the last 3 days, he is 100% refusing a bottle and only wants me.  He is waking like a newborn again, every couple hours at night vs the 4 or so he was doing & not wetting as many diapers.  I feel so bad...can't get how it just dries up?  He is frustrated too, but like I said won't take bottle and was taking bottle fine before.

  • Could this be a growth spurt? Nursing every hour or so sounds more like a growth spurt than that your supply is drying up. How many wet diapers a day is he making? If it's at least 5-6, then that's totally normal.

  • I would say it was definitely 5-6 before, but for example...last night, he went down at 10pm, I didn't have to change him until 5am...he was dry :(

Eating oatmeal every day for breakfast and drinking mothers milk tea always helped me to make more milk.

ETA: also, if it were me I would find a LC and some breastfeeding meetings to get some hands on/professional advice. My bf issues were different but I got a lot of help from an IBCLC and going to weighed feedings for a month or so where I could talk to a LC and other moms about bf.

  • My lactation specialist recommended oatmeal for breakfast, lactation cookies, Mother's Milk tea. I got some lactation herbal supplement from vitamin shoppe, and lecithin for blocked ducts. My girlfriend recommended Guiness to get started.
I finally started to put up some milk in the freezer this week. Im not consistent with anything but milk cookies (yum), but fairly regular. And pumping in the morning and after feeds (before feeds is better per my LC)
And drinking enough water everyday. You probably already do most of that :-)

  • Around 4 months with both of my boys my supply takes a hit. My prolactin levels begin to decrease as my hormones begin to turn normal and once they only wake once through the night for a couple of nights my supply really drops off so one night of waking more and I can't keep up with his demands to nurse.

I eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast, drink about 120 oz of water, take fenugreek and I still can't pump enough. My doctor even gave me a prescription to help increase my production. I nurse on demand when I am with him and we do fine
