2nd Trimester

Internal exam :(

Last night I ended up in L&D for abdominal pain that had lasted for 2 days. The doctors didn't really know what to think and the resident was rough as anything (I think she's in the wrong profession of you ask me ) , but decided that before I left, they'd like to do an internal to check me cervix.

This immediately put me into a panic because all I've ever read about internals were that they shouldn't be done until the very end of pregnancy if at all. I asked them so many questions like if it was necessary, would it give me another infection since im still being treated for BV and would it stimulate labour. They pretty much told be a big fat No, and said it was safe and necessary. So I stupidly went along with it bc I was alone , and boy do I ever regret it. The resident poked me so hard! Doesn't she know that our lady bits are tender anyway ? Just like a suspected, I didn't need one cause it was long and closed and up high.

Anyway, I'm sure all
Is okay and I'm still on flagyl for the BV so hopefully that'll take care of any bacteria that might have been up there , but my concern is her stimulating things to start happening.

That's not going to happen with only one internal exam will it ? Not like she did a sweep , but she poked hard enough. Now I'm stressing over that. It has been 12 hours and I've had no bleeding or contractions, and the bub is dancing away.

Just wondering if anyone had an internal cervix check in their second tri? I'm 21 weeks now .
I know it's not usually done then but it would be nice to have the reassurance. And next time someone wants to poke me up there im going to flat out refuse .

Re: Internal exam :(

  • I had a cerclage placed at 13 weeks and 2 weeks later I had a follow-up with my OB and she did an internal check (just stuck her hand up my hooha!) to check how my cervix was.  She wasn't very rough (actually it was just discomfort from having her hand all the way up), and didn't really tell me to watch out for any problems afterwards.  I would just look out for bleeding or contractions or if you feel different.  I saw your other post about the mucus plug.  It does and can regenerate (there are lots of women that lose bits of it at a time) and it isn't any indication of going into labor (like a bloody show would be).  But I would definitely call your doctor tomorrow and just asked to be checked out.  With an infection already going on down there, losing part of your mucus plug could introduce the bacteria closer to your baby (although I think the chance of that happening is very low, especially since you're already on an antibiotic).  It's never wrong to be concerned about things like that, and I'm sure your doctor would rather have you call and come in to check things out than sit around and wait to see if something happens.  Good luck!

  • I had at least 5 internals in my first pregnancy. I was high risk and the baby wasn't very cooperative. It never stimulated anything and there were no problems at all from having them.

  • My midwife gives me an internal exam at every visit because I am high risk. Its a good way for them to measure a few different things. I'm always told to lookout for cramps and bleeding afterwards.
