painful muscles after prenatal massage

I had a prenatal massage a day ago and my muscles particularly in my neck and shoulders are painful and swollen. I literally feel like I've been by a truck! Anyone else experience this before? If so, any ideas/remedies to help?

Always drink lots of water after a massage, it'll help with the soreness. It could be you were just very tense and had to be worked a little harder to get the tightness out. I'm not sure about being swollen, that has never happened to me, but it can be common to be sore afterward, especially if you don't drink much water to flush out the toxins that were just released.

  • I've also had soreness after a massage (not prenatal) before, because I was especially tight and they really had to work me. I would think it should be improved tomorrow

  • Yep !!! I had a prenatal massage could barely move !! My neck and shoulders were so sore! My doctor told me nothing I could take . My husband massage it a bit more , made it feel a little better . Think I was just so tight , it hurt so bad after . Hope you feel better
  • I get regular massages and will be sore sometimes, especially if areas need extra attention. Drinks tons of water and try to move the area...shoulder rolls, neck rolls. Also I will use one of those heated neck pillows to loosen everything back up. It should only last a day.
  • I would take a bath with Epsom salt as well as everything else was mentioned. Plus, I love baths.
  • I haven't have a prenatal massage before, but this is VERY typical for regular massage. The idea that someone is manually manipulating your muscles and connective tissues (tendons, ligaments) makes complete sense that you may experience some signs of inflammation (redness, heat, swelling, pain). As a PP stated already, the more water you drink (especially right after the massage) the better. It just flushes out your body and hydrates the muscles as they rebuild. Also, any type of doc-approved, over the counter NSAID is a good way to reduce the pain and swelling as your body recoops.
