My thoughts are that our culture is way too paranoid with pregnancy rules, most of those things have no known safety problems, and substances are for the most part poorly absorbed through your skin so the amount that gets into your bloodstream is insignificant.
Also, to be pedantic about science, everything is made out of chemicals. Even plants.
But everyone gets to decide what risks they want to take for themselves. If you feel better going more natural, that's a good enough reason to switch.
I agree with Annika that our society has made pregnant women paranoid. I switched out a bunch of my products two weeks ago for Burts Bees and have been regretting it. As soon as the stuff runs out I'm going back to my old stuff---retinol and all. It is literally IMPOSSIBLE to avoid chemicals in your everyday life unless you live in a bubble. Think about how many chemicals OUR moms were exposed to and we turned out okay.
I believe that your skin is your largest organ and IS perfectly capable of absorbing what you put on it.
I have a relatively easy time living chemical - free. Www.Ewg.Org has a great database of products and scores them based on likeliness to cause reactions or long term problems based on scientific studies of each individual ingredient.
A lot of FDA regulated products are self reported by the company, who is out for profit, not to make our lives better. As well, a lot of companies put natural on the product label for one ingredient when the rest are still chemicals with no long term studies on how they affect us with daily use over many decades.
Right now I am enjoying Alaffia brand body care products, Everyday Minerals makeup, and Biokleen kitchen products.
There is a non-profit site www.skindeep.com that ranks products in level of toxicity that might help if you want to check it out, but take it all in stride, educating yourself with this knowledge is helpful but it can also make you go stir crazy if you analyze everything!

Seriously not supposed to use retinoids. Research vitamin A and pregnancy.
You can find great products that are safe for you and the baby at health beauty stores or even at your local whole foods. You can find plenty very affordable paraben free and all the other extra poison ingredients. @tarahrobinson I've cut out those products so long ago I'm glad I don't need to start the transition now!
To be honest, yes there are chemicals in pretty much everything but I feel as human beings it's our responsibility to live as organic as possible to reap the best quality of out products and what's best for us. Yes we can say our mothers did what they wanted and we turned out just fine but just looking at stats we see the amount of GMO's increasing as well as the number of autoimmune diseases & illnesses just in the past decade. It's really a personal choice and to each its own.
I use earth angel mama for hair and body for me and my son. I wash my face with organic coconut oil and moisturize with raw shea butter. I use nourish brand deodorant or dr. Shmitts. To clean my home I use dr. Bronmers sals suds. I try to avoid processed foods and eat organic fruits, vegetables, and protein. I avoid stressful situations and conflict as best I can. I practice yoga 2-4 times a week and do Zumba as well. I did all this with my son and he is an amazing little boy. I do not know how much it all effects the pregnancy, but why not do all I can to make sure I am making the "best" baby I can. This is the life style I try to lead most of the time anyway, but knowing there is a life growing inside of me makes it much easier to give 110%.
