When to buy...

hi Ladies! I'm a FTM, 17 weeks today, and I'm nervous to buy anything baby related, besides books for me and the hubby. I feel like it's too soon but my hubby came home a couple of weeks ago with the cutest onesie that says Baby on it and a pair of ol' skool vans. I was excited. But when we were out shopping today, he wanted to buy more stuff. I told him I was glad he was excited but thought it was too soon and said to just wait because he'll want me to stop once I do get going.

When did you think it was ok to start buying stuff and setting up the nursery?

Re: When to buy...

  • We bought our crib when i was like 16 weeks. There was a great deal at babies r us. We also got our stroller and car seat a week or two after.

  • Did you know the gender prior to purchasing?

  • I have bought a playpen and some clothes. We are buying a crib and swing this week so we can take advantage of the bru trade in. I'm 17 weeks

  • There's no right or wrong time to buy. I think it depends on your personality. If you like to plan and have things set up in advance then by all means start buying now, there's no real reason to wait. On the other hand I did/bought very little with Baby #1 except set up a crib at like 30 weeks and now with #2 I know even that was unnecessary before baby was born as he slept with us for 6 months. Starting now spreads out expenses. Waiting lets you figure out what you really do and do not need. Your choice!
  • I'm 20w 2 days and i haven't bought anything.
  • With my first I didn't buy anything before he was born. He was also a premie so I lost out on some of my prep time. Luckily I had a bunch of stuff from my shower! With this baby, we have a crib but thats about it, and it was a hand me down from a family friend. We're getting a bunch of hand me downs from family but I seriously can't wait to go buy clothes! Hopefully finding out the gender today and then I can start doing some shopping!

  • I haven't bought a thing yet either. I figured ill wait till after my baby shower.
  • I'm a little over 20W, we bought a stroller so far, because it was a freaking hell of a deal. ( Graco Modes 3 in 1 for $70...um, yes please!?! ) Unopened, nothing missing, nothing wrong, just needed get rid of it. I still do a happy dance when I think of it. Lol. And my mom bought $200 worth of gender neutral 3-6 month clothes. I got paint for the nursery a few weeks ago, but haven't started yet.

I say you can start whenever you'd like to. We go for anatomy scan tonight and *hopefully* find out if it's a him or a her - I told DH not to make any plans afterwards because I have some money Dad gave me for the baby before he passed away, and it's burning a hole in my pocket! :)

  • We didn't buy anything until we found out the sex. We got a few boy clothes and bibs at our gender reveal and I bought a few boy pajamas. I did make a full registry and I plan to order all the furniture today...confirming with my MIL that we can store it at her house a few blocks away until we get the nursery painted. I did purchase a few decorative/storage things for the room already honey bee themed, they are in route. You don't have to get anything yet...still plenty of time. I'm in school and work so I wanted to get an early start I have a crazy schedule.
  • 17 weeks and we have been spreading things out.... this is number 5 in our family. Each week I buy a pack of diapers and put them away.. mostly size 1 because people buy newborn as gifts ;) ( after first two months I will switch to cloth)

We got a mamaroo for the baby, the one luxury I insisted on, but I got it new of OfferUp (like creigs list) with the infant insert for $100!

I have a few gender nutral outfits tucked away, but as soon as I know whst the baby is I will buy everything
  • Im 21 weeks and haven't bought anything yet either. I had a emotional break down due to not having bought anything because I've seen so many other moms to be buying things I feel we won't have time and the next 3 months will come speeding by, but we are waiting for the baby shower to see what we get from all of his family.
  • I'm 17 weeks and we haven't bought anything yet. I'm waiting until after next week when we find out the sex. I've come close to ordering a stroller on sale though but I resisted! Although I may have already started if it weren't for my super generous sister who gave me her crib, dresser/changing table and glider since she is all done having kids. Feeling very lucky for that!

We started buying stuff about a week ago. I am 18 weeks. Mostly because we want to spread the big expenses out over a couple months and wanted to take advantage of the BRU trade in offer. We are having a baby shower but I know my family and friends will mostly get her clothes - we are grateful for whatever.
  • I highly recommend buying a little here and there through out your pregnancy. It's definitely not too soon to start. If you are worried about losing the baby don't be, you'll need to buy items at some point.

Thanks Mamamads! Are you telepathic because I think that's probably the reason I've been holding out. I'm a planner, organizer, and shopper at heart... :D

  • I bought books for baby early. Once we found out the gender, I started buying. I know some might disagree, but I'm excited! Just keep the receipts!
  • All we've bought is diapers so far and replacement nipples for bottles. I'm 20w6d today. The only reason we haven't bought anything is because we're still cleaning out the room that will be the nursery. We also have been buying things for our son's birthday so that put a little hold on it too. With DS, we had a crib before 20w and just bought a big thing each month. I bought diapers weekly and small things weekly until we had enough to be set for a few months. It worked out well.

  • I'm 17 weeks. We just got the car seat/stroller and a cute little backpack for baby (don't know the gender and won't know until baby is born) and a few cloth diapers. We're just getting a little bit here and there so it doesn't end up being one giant expense.

  • I still get nervous too! But As soon as we found out our baby is a girl (at 13 weeks) my husband rushed to the mall and got a lot of pink clothes! I've started looking for a crib but I won't buy it until week 30 probably! I'm now 18w.
  • I'm 20 weeks and found out on Tuesday we are having a girl!

So far I've only bought stroller and car seat (Uppababy Vista and Mesa) but it's all black so it's gender neutral.

Ordered some adorable freshly picked moccasins today - it's my first frivolous baby purchase!
  • I'm 22 weeks, and just bought the coming home outfit this week. With all my kids I didn't shop until around 20-22 weeks.
  • We are 20+ weeks and after we found out the gender last weekend. There were some GREAT sales so we bought a bunch of stuff that has order/long delivery times like a crib and change table. I had heard stories of people having crazy 4-6 month wait times on some items that happen to be back ordered and didn't want that to be a factor.
  • We are leaving the gender a surprise and have begun purchasing as well as my family. What helped is I already knew I wanted a Pooh themed room. We are relatively laid back in making the choices for the room, as the baby won't use its crib for a few months and already have a bassinet for our room. It helps to not think everything has to be ready. Baby just needs You, a place to sleep and clothes to wear.
  • I'm 19 weeks and we've gotten a crib because my sister-in-law gave it to us as a gift. There was also a sale on Honest Brand products on zulily today so I did buy a few things like shampoo, diaper rash cream, and sunscreen. We aren't going to find out the sex so I think I feel less tempted to buy. We're refinishing a glider and a dresser so other than those items I don't plan to buy much else until after the shower...unless I find a good deal!
  • This is my third so already have all the essentials but after two daughters this time we are team blue! I thought I wanted another girl but since finding out we have been so excited and finding it hard not to go out and buy blue everything. I've got a couple of sleepsuits in newborn/0-3, a few other bits of clothes and a soft toy dog. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to baby, the stuff would be the least of my concerns... I guess in my heart now I am feeling him kicking away I feel like everything is going to be ok x
