NWMR: Cruise vs Disney

DH and I loved cruises prekids.  Now we don't have a ton of money for vacations, but we're trying to do a nice one every other year.  Almost a year ago the kids had just turned 2 and 4 and we did a cruise.  We were on the boat for a week, did 1 day in Disney and 2 in the Bahamas. We had a great time!  We're planning on doing Disney summer 2016, the kids will be 4 and 6.  I'd really rather do another cruise, but I feel like this will be the perfect time to do Disney with the kids.  Just yesterday DD, 4, was saying how much fun the cruise was and when will we go again.  I told her we were thinking of going to Disney on our next trip.  She seemed excited about sleeping there.  I felt we got alot out of Disney on our cruise excursion, but we didn't get to see fireworks or any character experiences and certainly didn't see the whole park.  My mom has also been saying for years when ever we go to Disney how much she'd like to come with us.  She doesn't do cruises and we go down the shore with my in laws every summer.  My parents usually show up for a few days, but we're not staying with them, so this would finally be a vacation she could really be included in.  However, although DD likes some of the princesses, she's not a huge princess fan and neither kid is all that big on character experiences.  DH feels Disney is just an amusement park and no one can really explain what makes it so great.  My inlaws go a few times a year, and they never really do have anything special to say about it.  The thought of spending all my vacation waiting on lines does not really appeal to me either.

Should I do Disney because the kids will be at a perfect age and I may regret it if we don't, or the cruise because that's what DH and I would rather do and the kids will enjoy that too.

  • I always said that I would never do Disney because it's so expensive and waiting in lines all day is annoying. Now my 3 year old is on this big princess kick and I'm rethinking it. I think if your mom is willing to help out and go with that might be a great option. Can you do like 3 days at Disney and then 3 days at a nearby beach?

  • I'd cruise this year and do disney on your next vacay when they're 6 & 8. They'll be better able to wait in lines. More apt to be into the character experiences and probably have a better shot at making it truly memorable.

This. I don't think they'll be too old for Disney anytime soon. If you're into cruises, go and enjoy it!

  • I just got back from Disney World last weekend with my 5 year old.  My mom and sister went with me.  Keep in mind my daughter is  HUGE disney princess fan so we did the Princess breakfast in Epcot (amazing experience but EXPENSIVE - $180 for 3 adults and 1 child, including tip).  However Epcot is not really a place for young kinds and by the end of the day she was bored out of her mind.  We did 5 days at the parks and it was ALOT.  I'm exhausted and feel like I need a vacation from my vacation.  If you are going to do the parks, I suggest doing maybe 2 parks, take a break from disney and then go back if you can.  Animal Kingdom was amazing.  They did such a wonderful job with the animal exhibits.  The Magic Kingdom was BUSY even in January so if you are planning to do this in Summer, expect to spend most of your time in line.  Try to plan the vacation off season when most kids are back in school (if you are willing to take your kids out of school).

  • Why not look into a Disney cruise this time around? The kids would still be able to enjoy meeting the characters, and from what I hear the ships and crew are amazing.
  • What time of year were you thinking?  I wasn't that excited about Disney but we took my kids for my daughter's 5th birthday (my son was not yet 2).  It actually was quite enjoyable, although we did go in late September which is very slow.  Lines were not really an issue for us because we went early, did some fast pass, and they were not old enough for things like Space Mountain anyway.  And when people got tired in mid-afternoon, we left.  We liked it much more than I thought, and we plan to return this year for my son's 5th.  I am nervous because it will be at a much busier time of year, but am hoping for the best.

I will say, it sounds sappy but it was sort of magical with the 5 year old.  She was young enough to truly believe that she was meeting the princesses, and the characters, etc.  And that only lasts for a short while.  I'm assuming that this time, at 8 she will wise up to it all (and am hoping she won't ruin it for her brother).
  • I grew up in Florida and going to Disney. Your kids really are the perfect age. I'm sure they would love a Disney cruise too though. I would never suggest going to Disney in the Summer. It's miserable - so hot and crowded. I LOVE Disney during Christmas. The first couple weeks in November, January, February, and March are also good times to go.
