Results from my glucose testing for Gestational Diabetes.

According to my doctor I barely passed my 1 hour test, so they wanted me to go ahead and do the 3 hour test last week.
I was sure I'd pass since I had passed my 1 hour test even if it was just barely. I took my test last Wednesday and was told that I'd get a call the following day and if I hadn't heard anything by Monday then I probably had nothing to worry about.
Well...I hadn't received a call so I was satisfied.
I received a call yesterday though and turns out that I do have gestational diabetes and will have to follow up with a different doctor about how we are going to manage it.

My pregnancy has been smooth sailing until this point and I know that GD can be managed, but I'm still worried about the potential complications of having a larger baby, her sugar being out of whack when shes born, and of course her delivery.

I'm hoping to find out this coming Thursday when I need to do in regards to diet. Until this point I've been eating whatever I wanted. I'm not worried about me so much...I am worried about my baby Emily.

If you wouldn't mind please toss some extra thoughts/prayers towards me. I could use it!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I have a similar situation. I failed my 1 hr by 1 point so I was pretty confident I would pass my 3 hour, but nope. I too am concerned for my baby and I'm a bit overwhelmed with how to manage it. I see my nutritionist today so hopefully I'll feel better about it after that. Do you go see a nutritionist soon?

I don't really know when I see anyone. I know that the diabetes specialists at my doctors office will only see me on Thursdays, so I think that it'll probably be next Thursday when they see me. I hope that is when they will go over a meal plan with me because I've got no clue what I'm doing, lol.

I'm sorry you're going through this, but so glad that I'm not alone. If you wouldn't mind, can you keep me updated after your appointment? I'd love to have someone to go through this with!

  • Just have to stay away from carbs and sugars. Start checking all labels and eating lots of green veggies. The person you will see will help you out. Do you like eggs and meat? Eat lots of it...I have GD for the second time and I hate it because I love food especially sweets. Juts a heads up...everyone is different and some people's bodies are able to handle certain foods. For an example there is a fast food place where I can eat a burger and a large fry and my sugar is low. I can eat certain kinds of mac and cheese. Also try atkins shakes and bars. Very low carbs and can help with cravings. You and your baby will be fine. Juat follow a good diet. Good luck and if anyone has questions I may be able to help.

  • I was in the same boat as you ladies a few weeks ago (I was tested early due to family history). I barely failed the 3 hour, then for the three hour test 1 number out of the 4 was higher than normal, so they sent me to a nutritionist. technically I am called "glucose intolerant" and not Gestational yet, but they are treating me as if I do have it to make sure I don't develop it later in pregnancy.

As long as you stick to the diet they give you, and keep your sugars in check (via checking it with glucose monitor) your baby will be completely fine. The only time babies grow larger because of gestational diabetes, or have complications is when the momma does not control her sugars well.

Hope this helps! If you have any questions let me know, I have been researching up on this for a while now :-)

  • Thoughts and prayers to all of you ladies. Unfortunately I have to join your club. I failed my 1 hour test today so badly that I don't even have to take the 3 hour test. After fasting (not necessarily intentionally, but the appointment was at 8:30 this morning), my sugar was 238 which led to a diagnosis on the spot. I'm a little overwhelmed and concerned, but know I can do this for the next 11 weeks. Just waiting for the call to schedule my diabetes management class now :(
  • Good luck, ladies!! T&P for all of you and your little ones.  Hopefully, everything goes perfectly.

Thank you for this. I do like eggs and meat. I don't eat nearly enough eggs. I'm just worried because I saw my parents struggle with diabetes and they absolutely hate it which everyone does. I don't think I can look to them for guidance because they seriously eat what they want when they want and how much they want. :(

I'm sorry hun. :( I wish I could have just found out at my 1 hour test rather than taking the 3 hour test. It wasn't that bad, but they had my 1 hr results back so much quicker than my 3 hour. Not sure why that was or if its just the office that I go to.

We can all get through this together!

  • Do you mind telling me what your score was on your first test? My doctor uses 130 as a cut off and I had a 124 - which seems close to me - but, I am not sure what it takes to get a point higher. I feel like I barely passed myself.

You can get through this! Just watch your diet and you and your little one will be great! I would join a support group on here to get some ideas/tricks on how to best manage it. And try not to read horror stories - most of them are exaggerated or they have different circumstances that make it more challenging than the average person. You will be great!

  • Yeah my family is the same way with eating what they want. My grandmother has meds to help her control her numbers so she thinks she can eat a cake then just take a pill. Does not always work like that and we have babies to keep in mind. Mine is so far just diet treated. It's not easy but it does not last forever. My husband does the diet with me. It's easier with support. I have my days that I just cry because I am hungry. I am not a veggie person and honestly can't stand eggs. Like I said before...look into atkins. You may even tell your family about it. They do have some pasta called dream fields that is carb smart and taste the same as the others. Also look for the low carb breads. I found one that is 16 carbs for 2 pieces. Give yourself a week of trying things. Your plate should be half green veggies, a protein and a carb. Make sure you don't cut carbs all the way. Not good for you are the baby. Like I said just play around with some foods and you will find some things that do not raise your sugar even though the doc says it does.

  • I'm in the same boat as you ladies. I have been researching a little bit, it seems pretty clear cut. Just not too excited to prick my finger 4x's a day, but it's only for a little while. I go in on Wednesday to get the low down.
  • Well I saw my nutritionist today and am feeling more optimistic. There are still lots of options for foods that I enjoy. I also got my blood monitor kit and started that. It doesn't hurt nearly as bad as I imagined. I ate my first meal without making any changes (turkey chili) just to see how bad my numbers would be and my numbers were great (111, have to stay under 130). So that gave me hope! Hopefully those of you who were recently diagnosed will feel better after you start monitoring. For me, now that I can monitor I feel more in control.

  • This is my second pregnancy dealing with GD. It is definitely something that can be controlled and the diet makes me feel so much better.
With that said, do we want to start a weekly check in to support each other?

  • Oh my gosh! So totally out of left field! how crappy. So sorry for you. Prayers that you're able to confidently navigate the next few months and that baby is healthy and strong when she comes out!
  • I didn't do the glucose test for a few reasons so I agreed to just finger poke for a couple days prior to s meal and an hr after. My levels are prediabetic. I'm finding reading this very helpful as the diabectic nurse has a scare tactic and I have been a mess for a week with anxiety and stress! Thank you for sharing your stories and experiences.
  • I also have gestational diabetes and trust me when you go to speak with the nutritionist it will make it so much easier. I have to take my blood sugar at fasting after breakfast lunch and dinner. In the beginning it was a little difficult getting the number down because you are trying to adjust what you are ready eating but now my numbers are good and my baby is growing at a normal rate. I would not worry about having a large baby just eat right and everything will be ok.

Thank you so much for keeping us updated. That does make me feel better seeing your results from what you had for dinner.
I'm anxious to get through my appointment because I feel like I'm wasting time. I have no clue what will raise my numbers and what isn't going to.

I would LOVE that! I think that we could all use the support.
I don't want to have to find another board or group of people to speak with about this. I'm partial to all of you ladies now, lol.

Thank you for this. I was really wondering if baby would still grow larger even if numbers were kept normal or close to normal.

  • Hey ladies! I wanted to chime in a bit as well. I am insulin resistant, even when I'm not pregnant, and it was a miracle that I passed my 2-hour glucose screening. I am still very careful, however, because I know I am teetering on the edge and I want my LO to be healthy.
Anyway, I was talking to my midwife about the potential of GD and she said most of her patients go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies just with proper nutrition and exercise. She really stressed how important exercise is! She said walking for 10 minutes after every meal has helped a lot of her patients maintain their sugar numbers. Not only that, but it amounts to your 30 minutes of exercise daily, which is a plus! I know it's bitter cold right now, so it's been hard, but sometimes I'll do squats or march in place for 10 minutes instead of braving the weather outside. Good luck ladies! You can do this!
