Birthing Classes

Hello All,

First time poster, long time reader! I searched and searched so if someone already posted about this then will someone please bump it so I can read. I don't want to waste more time searching if it isn't there.

So our doctor gave us a pamphlet about taking birthing classes, we are FTP and want to learn all we can to be as prepared as possible. That being said, when she gave us the information I asked when we should sign up or take the classes and she said whenever we want, very helpful. Through our insurance, Kaiser, it's a 5 session 2 hour classes program.

My question is, when did you start taking birthing classes and is it really too early to start taking classes?

Re: Birthing Classes

  • I feel like as long as you're actually pregnant, it's never too early to start. I hear classes fill up quickly depending on your location so sign up while you can!

I have not taken any classes yet but fully plan to when I find out which ones are offered near me.

  • Normally around 20 weeks you sign up, but you can sign up earlier than that. I took them with my first around 6 months pregnant.
  • When we signed up for classes, we were told to schedule it so we're finishing the classes by week 37, which is considered early term. This helps make sure the info is fresh in your mind.

  • I think earlier is better. I like being prepared and know what to expect ahead of time. It is also a good time to be able to talk to other mamas about the process. If your SO is going it is good too because there was a lot my DH was not aware of and it gave him time to understand, research and digest it all. I loved my birthing classes! Have fun and keep an open mind.
  • I never went to any with our other two kids.  Our hospital does offer a sibling class I think I'm going to take the kids to this time.

  • We did Hypnobirthing with our first and that was 4 weeks.  I think when we started I was about 30w.
  • We signed up for a one time, all day baby/birthing class in early June when I'll be about 33 weeks. I'm also going to do a breastfeeding class around that same time. I thought about taking them earlier but then decided to wait until closer to our due date.
  • my hospital offers an 8 session birthing course and an all day one. i think we're going to just do the all day one because it's on a saturday, whereas the other one needs 4 tuesdays (when i have a commitment after work) and 4 thursdays (when DH has a commitment for work). they recommend completing the course no later than 3 weeks before the due date, but i am going in may (i'm due at the end of july) because i want to have it taken care of well in advance.
  • I am looking at taking a Hynobirthing class, a traditional childbirth class, and a breastfeeding class.

  • I think we took our classes so they wrapped up about 4 weeks before the due date.

  • My doctor recommended not taking the classes any earlier than 24 weeks, but she said anytime after that is fine. I think the more you know about your pregnancy/baby before you take the class and the fresher the information is in your mind for delivery the better!
  • My Dr said I could start looking to schedule classes now, I'm at 19 weeks but the hospital only had a class schedule through March so I'm watching and waiting. She also recommended taking a breast feeding one over a birthing class if time/money was an issue.
  • Just my two cents...

I felt that classes didn't help prepare us much, other than the breastfeeding and baby care part(and that was mostly informative for DH). Insurance didn't pay for much of it either. I felt it was a waste... I learned more from reading books and watching YouTube videos!

Just my experience though, take it for what it's worth!
