Newborn Skincare Products

Hi ladies- just wondering if you have any recommendations as far as baby shampoos, lotions, etc and what lines you use. It's so hard To register when there are so many to choose from! I've heard great things about California Baby but it seems super expensive. I also like Aveeno products but don't know of anyone who's used them on baby. Thanks!

Here's my advice, leave baby's skin alone unless there is a reason to use any products. Shampoo only when there's a reason, aka spitup or poop has made it into the hair otherwise a bath with no soap is preferred. We use The Honest Co and my kiddo has very sensitive skin. Same goes for lotion, only apply lotion if there's a need, my kid is 2.5 and I've never applied lotion to his skin. But again I love Honest Company.

Honest Company is great! If you're looking for stuff sold in regular stores, ie Wal Mart/Target, go with Aveeno. We had DD on Johnson&Johnson to start and she had horrible baby acne because of it. Our pediatrician said to use Aveeno and her skin has been perfect ever since.

We use Babyganics. I agree with @jessicabrennan though that less is more. Marketers will make you feel like that you have to lube baby up with lotion every day five times per day...not the case at all. Obviously if their skin is drying out or something, use the appropriate product, but I am not a fan of putting products on baby just because. We did shampoo his hair at baths though and used the Babyganics soap. I like Parent's Choice (walmart) shampoo.

Make sure there's no parabens or petroleum products Vaseline is actually a derivative of oil so if you use something called live clean they have a nonpetroleum based similar to Vaseline that you can use if you need to do something but live clean has a whole variety of things that are free of nasty additives

I am planning on using Aveeno. My husband has a skin condition causing his skin to be very dry and irritated, but we have been thrilled how greatly improved his symptoms are with Aveeno products.

I agree with first commenter. I use plain old water on my babies now. If I use a lotion for dry skin I use natural stuff that I make or find online. Their skin is so delicate and still adjusting. I just don't use anything if I don't have to. Just clean up with warm, damp cloth after feeding. Less is more. There is so much marketing that says you need SO much for baby and you don't.

Cali Baby isn't that great, IMO. Burt's Bees caused the worst cradle cap! I found many great products on Amazon and the stuff lasts us forever since I don't use it unless, like first commenter said, there's a blowout diaper and baby needs a good washing Which is rare with our cloth Diaps. I think the brand is called Sweet Peas.

We have used Aveeno with DD with no issues though it is not top of the line as far as low toxicity goes. We do make sure anything we use on her is free of parabens. For a moisturizer, soothing chapped skin, cradle cap, etc... extra virgin coconut oil is great with little babies if they really need it, but I also agree with the less is more approach with the little ones. We do use vaseline on occassion and stick primarily with The Grovia Magic Stick for diaper cream or Triple Paste when we ever get a bad rash (rare)

I use burts bees. It's the best I could find that was in my budget. It's MUCH better than j&j or aveeno, in my opinion.

I never just scrub soap all over him. Like PP said. If he's dirty I just add a little to the water.

If his skin is dry I just rub a little coconut oil on it. I avoid lotion all together. It makes his sensitive skin worse.

Aveeno worked great for us as a baby wash. With her sensitive skin she took mostly water baths, with a little soap to clean the important areas.

Loooove Aveeno! It smells so yummy! And I've started using the baby lotion on myself it's so great! Mustela is also a great brand but expensive. They make a foaming cradle cap shampoo that really helped with my first. It was a little more expensive but 1 bottle probably lasted us a little over a year. Also smells amazing! I know people love Honest Co but I stand the smell!

I need to buy stock in Aveeno. I didn't really use the brand because it can be expensive. When DD was a baby she was having reactions to everything so I tried it and it worked wonders. Not just the shampoo and soaps but I love the diaper rash cream too.
To this day I use their products for myself, for DD and I will use it for the new baby too.

I am glad to see so many suggesting plain water bath. My aunt had also recommended olive oil for the cradle crud on the scalp. It worked great!

DD is 2 and we've never used lotion on her- unless you're buying something truly all natural and organic you're just introducing toxins into their body (and who wants one more thing to do during the day?!).
We use an all natural soap from the farmers market for bath time, but only bathe her every other day. It used to be less often when she was younger and didn't play so hard.
For hair, I just rinse it with water and maybe once a week do a conditioning wash with Shea Moisture conditioner.
Less is more! I know it's hard with marketing these days, and grandma telling you they need baby powder (they don't!), etc... But babies don't need all the stuff we think they do. Try not to stress!

We use a Norwex baby cloth and water for bath times on my 17 month old and for shampoo, I put on a tiny amount of homemade shampoo that's just Dr. Bronner's castille soap and distilled water.
