Babywearing a newborn?

I never really got into wearing DD1.  With DD2, I eventually found a mei tai that I loved (well, mostly loved).  Now that #3 is on the way, I want to start wearing him/her very early on.  My EDD is 2 weeks before school gets out for the summer and my kids (4 & 6) will not want to hang out in the house all summer.  We are in PA so the weather has potential to get kind of toasty.  Suggestions on an easy carrier for newborns/infants?  I also tend to end up with rather chunky babies and it always seems like circulation in their legs gets cut off.  Won't be sharing the carrier with DH.

I love my woven wrap. Works for littles and bigger kiddos. There is a learning curve to them so if you can go to a BWI meeting to see it in person,if not tons of YouTube videos. My LO is 6months and I started with the wrap at about 2weeks and have never looked back. I have also used an onbu (kinda like a Mei Tai) that is nice for when I don't feel like using the wrap.
    Good luck, babywearing is awesome!

  • Unless the mei tai you already own is like a toddler-sized one (and thus prohibitively large for a newborn), I'd just cinch the body of it with a knotted ribbon and wear baby legs-out from birth in it.  Personally, I'm all about woven wraps, but if you already have a carrier you love, you can just keep it simple and stick with that one.

  • I used my Mei tai the first week home, around 7lbs.  DH used the Pikkolo at the same time.  We also used the Moby at that time.

  • I used an Ergo with the infant insert starting at 2 weeks. I live in VA, so it gets pretty warm and humid during the summer, and I just avoided being outside when it was really hot. They do have a sport version that is suppose to be more breathable and light weight, but the infant insert is still going to be a heavier/hot item. But I do love the carrier!
  • I liked wearing DD in either a ring sling or a Moby as a newborn. The ring sling was cooler in hot weather, but the moby was a bit more secure.

  • I preferred the moby type wrap when ds was newborn (6lb) I felt it was plenty secure and that is how he slept for at least 2 of his naps/day... 1 of those on DH :)
  • I plan to try a k'tan for the newborn stage, but am now debating a Moby as well. I will move to as ring sling/wrap eventually. It's hard to decide which way to go for a newborn (in hot weather)
  • Moby then Ergo.

  • The woven wrap love is growing on me, I can't wait to wrap my baby up right off the bat. I wore my daughter (9 years ago), in a Snugli on occasion just so I could get stuff done around the house because she refused to be set down, I wish I had known about wraps back then! I've practiced on my 20month old son a few times, but since he wasn't 'worn' regularly, he's pretty rambunctious about it, and being 35w pregnant makes it even harder lol. I also have an Infantino mei tai that I hope to get some use out of, wore my son in it to the hospital when we had to go for his sleep study and it worked really well, I put all our bags and coats in the stroller while he sat happy on my back!

Sorry got of tangent, I'm just excited to try my wrap out on my new squish :)

  • My DD was in a ka tan in Costco at 3 days old. She was 9.5 lb at birth. I liked that it was quick to put on, little learning curve and very breathable. I also love my lillebaby from birth. Both were great and breathable.

Do you have a baby wearing group where you can try different types out? Or a store you can borrow/rent from?

I found baby wearing a newborn while chasing a toddler around the playground to require a lot more head support. I originally had purchased a nesting days newborn carrier for DD2 but I found I still had to support her head with my hand. Same with the ring sling. So I ended up using the baby bjorn right away. It felt a lot better and more secure while running after a toddler. The bjorn has really nice head support (FYI the new babybjorn one is not a crotch dangler and has good back support, which were the two main complaints about the bjorn original)

  • Ktan makes a breeze version that is mesh and even more breathable.
  • My personal favorite is the K'tan. It's just so easy to use. Whenever I try to tie my regular wraps they always end up either too tight or too loose.
  • Solarveil fabric is amazing for warmer climates. I had a ring sling and mei tai. Both were amazing for growing babies. My daughter was 17 pounds at 2.5mths they both were great.
  • I used a mei tai with my newborn, just rolled the bottom a couple times and kept her legs frogged. Also a linen ring sling breathes great and came in handy. Our stretchy wrap was great, but might be a bit warm outside of an air conditioned place.
  • My baby's 2 months and she's been in the k'tan since birth. I love it because the outside panel provides head support.
  • I used the ergo 360 with the infant insert at 2 weeks old and also used the moby. Now I'm totally into the mei tei....I rotate and use the carriers for different needs....hiking and long walks=ergo 360.....casual walks or around the house=mei tei
    Dinner out or store=moby

I loved my Ergo! Like other posters, I used it around 2 weeks. For walks, grocery shopping, traveling etc.
And also my daughter just turned 2 and I still get plenty of use out of the Ergo.
