So I have just been informed by my doctor that I am "Severely Anemic". Being diagnosed with anemia my doctor is having me take vitamin C supplements and Iron supplements. Any other ladies dealing with this? If so, what are you doing for it and how have you reacted to the (most likely) up in your Iron intake?

Re: Anemia

  • Yes. Taking my iron for it. Feeling less anemic.

  • I can't say I'm severely anemic but I had my 32 week checkup today and my iron level had drop from 11.2 to 9.9. So my dr gave me a prescription for an iron supplement to start taking. I also had to do this with my DS.
  • Watch out for constipation- cause iron is really binding. Drink tons of water and if you still have issues ask for a stool softener. The vitamin C really helps with your bodies absorption of the iron. Get ready for black poop :-)

I also am anemic though not severe. I was told to take Floradix, a liquid iron supplement that someone on here described as tasting like "bloody pennies" (which of course is all I think of everytime i take it) and my iron went up from week 24, last tested at 32 weeks 1 day. I don't remember he exact numbers. I take it in the morning only because it expensive but I also take an iron tablet in the evening. I haven't had issues with nausea or constipation with this particular combo. And I chase both orange juice and try to take on an empty stomach.

  • I am also anemic . I suffer from Hypermessis Gravidarum and iron makes me really nauseous. My midwife told me to switch to Slow Fe - a slow release iron pill and works really well. No more extra nausea and no constipation.
  • I was diagnosed at 16 weeks with anemia, and I am now currently 33 weeks. I was put on an iron supplement, and although they didn't give me Vitamin C to take with it, I did my own research and started drinking a small glass of orange juice every time I took it. I am now no longer considered anemic, but they still have me taking it since my levels aren't particularly high.

I think it was about two weeks after I started taking the supplements that I started feeling a lot less tired. Before taking the iron pills it didn't matter how much or how little I slept, I was always dead tired. I haven't had any negative effects.
  • I am super duper anemic--to the point they were worried I'd have an arrythmia. So far, supplements and B12 shots are not really helping much. But they do make you super constipated! Wish I could be more positive.
