Re: Any other Celiacs??

  • I have Hashimotos Thyroidtitus, autoimmune disease of the thyroid. I was gluten free for 3 years (and soy, dairy, nut, egg, grain free, too) but I've incorporated things back in because there's no way I could get all the nutrients to my LO on that ridiculous (but required) diet. With Celiac, I know you MUST avoid gluten however, I personally wouldn't worry about the contents of the glucose test.If it does have gluten, iI doubt it would be enough to affect you. Plus, it's an important test I personally wouldn't want to go without. My mom has Lupus and they told her "your daughters will have autoimmune diseases by the time they're 30". Sure enough, it arrived right as predicted.

Sorry, im all over the place. Best thing we can do is give our LO the best nutrients, prenatal care, and infant care as possible. Sometimes I feel like there isn't enough info out there for autoimmune sufferers, but talking with others in the same boat is helpful. Thanks for starting thus thread. Look forward to seeing what others say.

  • I have celiac as well as another auto immune disease called Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE). My two sons do not have Celiac but do have EOE. My OB wasn't too concerned but than I guess he wasn't too knowledgeable about it either. I'm switching OBs so we will see what the new one says. My allergist wasn't too concerned. I'm going to try to breastfeed this time but I'm also going to take dairy out of my diet since it can mimic gluten reactions. Plus, my kids and I have a ton of allergies so I'm doing it just to be on the safe side. Will probably re add it to my diet once the baby is a couple of months old and see how she does. I'm concerned about the food in the hospital. Didn't even think about the glucose test! I do know that I have to get different meds for my ends copy but I think that's bc of a different food allergy I have (probably soy or egg).
  • And I wouldn't worry too much about the baby lacking on nutrients just bc you aren't eating gluten...there's other grain options like rice. Some other countries do not even eat wheat.
  • I have coeliacs, with a very strong family history of it (mother and 3 siblings). Coeliacs is multi factorial - there's certainly a genetic link but you can't predict whether someone will have it based on genetics alone and the other factors which cause it are unclear. So your doctors are correct that you'll have to wait and see (not on the 50:50 thing though, that's a gross simplification - you might as well say you have a 50:50 chance of winning the lottery because you'll either win it or you won't)

From the reading I've done, it's not known whether you should avoid feeding your child gluten or not. There's theories either way, but as far as I can tell there's no clear cut evidence either way.

You can't really expect your obstetrician to be an expert on non-obstetrics medicine, although I'm sure they know the basics. It's completely possible to have a balanced diet without gluten. In fact my sister is both coeliac and vegan and has a very healthy 2 year old with another one on the way. But if you're concerned I would suggest seeing a dietician for advice.
