Recommended reading for Hubby

Greetings all!

This is all quite new for us, and though I'm doing constant research, would like to give my husband some material to read on what to get ready for in the next coming months :)

Any recommended books for hubbies? Sort of a what to expect when you're expecting for guys? :)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Recommended reading for Hubby

  • Good luck with that, my husband absolutely refused.. So I backed off of the subject with him.

  • Mine would not read material. He just had me summarize WTEWYE every week. ONCE in a while he would thumb through it, but Not often. I think that book has dad specific sections that I would force him to listen to me reading.

LOL, this.  I think it would have stressed him out more.  I just told him to say "Yes, dear" and "Can I get you something to eat?" for 9 months.

If that's your husbands thing, great.  But if not, don't worry about it.  They do things differently. Mine never read a book and is an unbelievable dad.

  • I got my husband a book titled Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads

by Gary Greenberg and  Jeannie Hayden

However I feel you @ansanna, I don't think he cracked it open during my first pregnancy.  As women, there is probably not an hour that goes by that we don't think about being pregnant, motherhood ,etc.  I think it is normal for men to be a little removed from it all until the baby arrives.

  • I got my husband all sorts of books; funny, informational- you name it i bought it. He read zero percent of them.

  • My hubby had a lot of fears like what if the baby doesn't like him etc, he is reading dad's guide to pregnancy for dummies and he said it is really informative and he also likes the fact that it outlines his fears are totally normal.
  • My husband liked the Baby Owner's Manual when we got further along in my first pregnancy. He then proceeded to tell me all about different breastfeeding positions at which point I had to remind myself that I was happy he was engaged and taking an interest.
  • My hub swears by Be Prepared....he said it's easy and quick read and actually have some useful info.

The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year and Show Dad How are good options too.

  • My SO is reading "Dude you're gunna be a Dad!"

  • Mine has this app on his phone and tends to google stuff often! I don't think he has clue and then I'll say hey did you know the baby is this big now and he'll add yeah and it's already developed this and that. It always surprises me that he knows stuff!
  • My husband is not a reader, but he just finished From Dude to Dad and really liked it. He also has The Expectant Father but hasn't started it yet.
  • I bought that for my guy too! @megleaet‌ I mean, he still hasn't opened it yet but said to me today "I know I have to start" lol I'll be happy if he reads a couple chapters.
  • My husband has been reading "Dude You're Gonna Be A Dad" and really likes it. He's not much of a reader but this one is easy and we both feel like he now understands this all better. It's really cute too because he feels so proud of himself when he knows about something I'm experiencing or that happens at the dr.

  • My DH works so hard and has a very intense interest in writing music, so he doesn't read at night- he's either in the garage writing or he's crashed out! I send him important info via FB message links pretty often, as my best bet for him to see anything is if it's on his phone!
I'm also trying to get him to watch The Business of Being Born one night- it's very well done and he does like movies! Lol
I'm not worried though, he's awesome and when it comes to babies, he follows my lead and soaks it all up like a sponge! Plus... He makes me laugh so that's worth more than a dozen labor pain management techniques.
  • My hubs isn't a big reader either, but is also really enjoying "Dude ,you're gonna be a Dad!" It's also nice because it breaks it up into trimesters. He read the first trimester section and put a reminder in his calendar to read the 2nd trimester section before it begins. Makes it more doable I think!
  • My DH did not touch any of the books I got. My sister sent us "Dude You're Going to Be a Dad" because her DH really liked it. I ended up reading it and thought it would be a great book for expecting dads :)

Ha! Yeah they do things their own way sometimes.. Mine doesn't even allow himself to get exited until I'm past the first trimester :) he's so anxious to be a dad and just keep saying 'I wish the next 4 weeks would pass already!' I just read him some of the weekly bump updates when I catch him at a good moment.
  • My husband enjoyed the "Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads." He bought it himself the day after we found out, it was adorable :x
  • My Hubby read Dude You're Going to Be a Dad. He really enjoyed it and it was an easy read for him. Although I will say that after reading it he thinks he is some sort of expert like the other day I was complaining of some light cramping and he's like oh that is probably just your uterus stretching! He's constantly refrencing the book lol
  • @paigetim That's adorable! I plan on getting Dude You're Going to be a Dad (due to all the recommendations on this thread) for my SO for his birthday on the 28th! He will likely pull the same thing...
  • I got my husband The Dad's Playbook to Labor & Birth: A Practical and Strategic Guide to Preparing for the Big Day, becuase it looked light and funny.  He really likes it, and will randomly quote things from it. Its really cute!
  • I got my husband A New Father: A Dads Guide to the First Year for Valentine's Day. He hasn't started reading it yet but we thumbed through it and it seems really great. It goes over week by week and month by month what to expect with baby. Like what baby can see and hear in these months and best things to do with baby to help them learn. It also goes over what is happening with moms body and what she is probably feeling during this time. It's a good guide for what dad can do to help in these stages during the first year.

  • My husband is also reading Dad's Guide to Pregancy for Dummies. My brother is a first time dad & lent it to my husband. He really likes it :)
  • I bought my hubby Pregnancy Sucks: For Men and he seems to like it. It has more humor than information, which is okay with my husband...he doesn't want to be overloaded with info (like I do) so he just want the book he reads to hit the key points and give him tips!
