Purchasing diapers in advance

I was reading other posts about purchasing diapers in advance so when LO arrives you'll have a surplus. Then I was reading other posts about not all diapers being created equal, whether it be fit, quality, etc. So how has this worked out for anyone in the past? Did you use them all then decide on a brand that worked best? Did you only buy a certain amount?

  • I just bout everything I could with DD. I bought a bunch of different brands and sizes. If you find that one brand doesn't work, you can always take them back. Walmart will take things like that back without a receipt and you can exchange them for some that do work for you. I bought some newborn size but mostly ones and twos. It is definitely well worth it!

  • Thanks ladies, these are some great suggestions.
  • Last pregnancy, my dad and step mom started buying a pack for us every time they went grocery shopping. I had no idea they were doing that and at my baby shower they presented me with a stack of boxes up to the ceiling. It lasted us for about the first 6 months, which was nice.

They were Pampers and we never had an issue so we continue to buy them. They gave us a pack of Huggies at the hospital, and those were fine too, so we used them up as well. A diaper is a diaper to me (and my DD apparently).

  • We liked Luvs.  They were the only ones that seemed to contain the poo for us.

Just a word of caution:   I have had rotten luck at buying too much in advance.  DS never even fit in to newborn sizes (he was a "biggun")  I really dreaded going into the store with a newborn, a toddler and standing in line at the returns department.

gift cards are a great idea.  (you will of course want SOME diapers at home to prepare )

  • @KLB2T, this is what I am hoping, that a diaper will just be a diaper. @jessandandy09‌, I know the returns department was a pain with your hands being full. We will definitely have some diapers on hand. Maybe stock up size ones and not so many newborns in case they do not fit.

You could buy a smaller pack of newborns, just in case...the hospital will likely send you home with a pack anyway though.

My DD was small and we needed to by several packs of newborn and even a few preemie sizes, lol. My parents had only stocked us up from size 1 to size 3.

This. We asked for more diapers each time a new nurse came on and stocked up. Your insurance pays for it in the end anyway, and at that point we had already reached our OOP max, so I wanted my money's worth!
  • Were doing a gender reveal and diaper shower next week. So if you're throwing a gender reveal, it might be something you can throw in there to get some diapers out of the deal too! If we weren't doing that, I'd be buying one pack at each grocery store visit!

With #1, I did the gift card thing bc I was clueless how different brands would fit. With that being said, Pampers Swaddlers were def the best brand for both of my boys -- best fit, coverage, and blow-out proof. So this time around I'm just stocking up on Pampers. Some NB and lots of size 1s. :)
  • This is our third and we always buy ahead of time and it's always worked out. We don't buy much NB though. I think we just bought a bag the other 2 times and did mostly 1's and 2's and a couple 3's. It's so nice not to have to worry about that expense. We go with Pampers all the time, have never had a leak or a problem with our boys. I have heard Huggies are best for girls but that's just what my friends with girls have said.
  • I love the idea of buying in advance!
For my first, I excusively bought Pampers - cheaper brands always seemed to cause a rash or issues,
And I found that Pampers were noticibly softer than Huggies.
Each mom / baby seems to have a preference .. Gift cards are a savvy move!
  • We loved huggies (and Costco brand since they're the same thing) They were the only thing DD didn't pee right through.
I don't plan on stocking up because this baby might be different then DD. I plan on just buying TARGET gift cards here so I'm spreading out the cost but can actual buy the right brand once we know what works.
  • Did this with my last son as well. By the time He was born I had so many diapers I did not have to buy diapers till after he turned 1 years old! Also at my baby shower everyone bought a package of diapers to help fill up my supply as well. It was great!
  • Oh and one thing I do stock up on is baby wipes. I buy non scented ones just incase the baby has sensitive skin
  • I bought a pack of luvs newborn and a case of size ones as well! We only bought a small pack of newborn because we have big babies that always outgrow the newborn size really fast! Plus they give you a pack at the hospital! On my registry I have size ones and twos. Size three is the size he'll be in the longest, but it'll be a while before he gets there! Lol But we do plan on buying them and stocking up during the pregnancy. We weren't as prepared with our others, so we're trying to be prepared this time around.
  • Also keep in mind some babies are allergic to different brands of diapers. My little cousin couldn't wear pampers then his little brother couldn't wear luvs. I used pretty much every brand with my son and target brand is my favorite . So this time I'm buying some of the smaller packs of diapers that way if she is allergic I've only opened 1 small pack that's was $6 instead of a huge $30 box of diapers. Just don't open any diapers until u need them. You can always exchange them for a different brand or size if need be.
  • This is just what my MIL said happened with DH. She bought Huggies but he was allergic so she had to switch to Pampers, but my mother put me in anything and I was fine. I'm going gamble that my LO will be like me, if they aren't I'll return or donate.
