Nursery water

anyone out there read that fluoride in nursery water is not good for our babies when mixing with formula ... I'm reading these articles about it and it's a little upsetting as I have been mixing formula with the nursery water with fluoride since LO was born what's everyone's thoughts on this topic?

Re: Nursery water

  • EBFing here so I'm not facing this concern directly. I have however heard of the dangers of fluoride in young children. Not sure what is considered an acceptable amount since I did also read it's not necessary to get toothpaste without fluoride for those first chompers. As long as a very small amount is used, I believe the exact words were a smear. Since LO doesn't have any teeth I haven't discussed this with the pedi yet though. That might be your best place to find some answers.

  • I wish I was EBFing it didn't work out we made it almost a month just wasn't producing enough....I think I'll be talking to my pedi but since this water is advertised for babies to use from birth and up I would sure hope it isn't harmful to babies... From what I've heard tap water has more fluoride than nursery water
  • I've never researched it myself because I EBF my LO but when I make bottles for the 2 babies I watch I always just use distilled water, per their mothers instructions. She told me that she doesn't want them to have the fluoride that's in nursery water.
  • Ah guess I'll make the switch kind of wish my pedi would have said something...we don't go back to her for two months but we'll just use the water without the fluoride from here on out
  • I've never used it as it's unnecessary if you have good tap water and also no teeth yet? No need. Our tap is great and fluoridated and two kiddos on formula have had no issues.

  • i've heard the same thing, but i'm no help - we use tap water, which is fluoridated, and our pedi is ok with this. he's pretty on top of this stuff so if he had no issue, i decided it was ok. i didn't want to have to buy water all the damn time when i can get it for free...

  • I thought it was the other way around and the problem with nursery water is that it doesn't have fluoride.

  • I've done some research on this myself lately bc I've been using filtered tap water all along and started reading to be careful about it, despite no one EVER even asking me what kind of water I was mixing my formula with. From reading the CDC's website, my local water utility site, and talking to my pedi... Our tap water is perfectly fine for infants. The cdc says the fluoride in your tap water measures above 0.7 to not use it. My city's is below that. The pedi says to never use bottled water bc it has more fluoride than tap and to "be careful" with nursery water bc it can have too much fluoride as well. Odds are if you are on city water you are fine to use it. I've decided we will buy jugs of distilled water whenever we travel though just in case.
  • When I ff ds1, I just boiled regular tap water for 10 minutes and put into a glass pitcher and kept that in the refrigerator to use.
