June 2015 Moms

Prenatal classes

Just registered for prenatal classes at my hospital! They won't be until May, which makes me kind of nervous since EDD is June 2, but they don't offer any in April and my OB said March was early and recommended going later so the info would be fresh in our minds... so May it is!

I registered for the standard prenatal class (includes info on labor and delivery, postpartum care, and "newborn tips"), the breastfeeding class, and the breastfeeding and back to work class. I also registered DH for the Dr. Dad class.

What classes do you plan to take? Are there any that aren't available at your hospital that you wish were? My hospital doesn't have a lamaze class anymore, so I'll just have to go with the website for info on that.

Re: Prenatal classes

  • I need to get moving and sign up for them, I really wish I could do the ongoing ones but DH's schedule just won't work so it'll be one day classes for us. Hoping to get in as many as possible!

  • @MamaBish‌ yeah, I wish my hospital offered them more frequently than on a bimonthly basis. There's no way we'd be able to fit all of those in if we were to take the March ones, I have too much going on between my classes and my internship. Thankfully May is during the summer trimester for my school so I only have one night class and greater flexibility. But yeah, it would probably be good to sign up soon, I know at my hospital they fill up fast!

  • I didn't take any with my first and I won't take any this time either. I think it went ok without a class.. But I also think its great if you have the time..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • @jbatch‌ well that is good to know in case DD decides to make an early appearance!

  • Signed up last week. Most of the classes at the hospital near me were already full through June! Thankfully we found the series we want at a hospital near my work but I couldn't believe how fast things filled up.
  • I registered for a birth express class in April. It just goes over labor and delivery and pain management options. I opted out of the intensive class since I'm a NICU nurse and have spent my career caring for babies. I'm well educated in baby care and breastfeeding. The lactation consultant I work with is doing a private one on one session with me so I don't have to sit through the whole in depth class. DH and I will attend the express class together.
  • We went a little nuts signing up for classes: birth class, infant CPR, dad group, breastfeeding and pumping classes.
    Coffee Bean Born 6/13/15.
    2nd round exp 8/20/18.
    Meow.
  • I signed up for a breastfeeding class, and breast feeding and returning to work class, and a post natal care class. Opted out of the birthing class, have been reading a lot and also having a friend who is a certified mid wife in the room with me. The post natal care class is more for DH, he is terrfified about what to do with the baby once it comes. He has never been around infants before and I am sure there are plenty of things I don't know.

Also currently enrolled in prenatal yoga, which I love. It helps so much with stretching and addressing pregnancy problem areas like back pain and calf cramps. We do focus on some poses for labor, etc. Also allows for some time for me and baby just relax and focus on this pregnancy. I would highly reccomend this.

  • Ours is the same way, with no classes in April! I decided to take the March set (well, it's 6 weeks, so it will end in April) because my mom delivered all of us two to four weeks early and just in case I am similar, I'd rather have to refresh the info before baby comes than not get it all!

The six week course covers most of the other basic classes (breastfeeding, infant care, CPR) but we also signed up for one called "Coping with Confidence" which is supposed to help you with pain management, and my husband wanted the fathering course, so he's doing that. Man, once those courses start (about a month!) things will really feel real!

  • We are doing a one-day labor class in late April, then a breastfeeding and post-natal care class (both evening classes) in early May. All through our hospital.
  • I was going to do Birth Bootcamp but that got cancelled. Now I'm doing a 6 week one with a doula using the plum tree materials. I have the hypno babies book and CDs from a friend too if I decide to self study
  • I have a Preparing for Childbirth class and a So You Want to Breastfeed class at our local hospital, one the end of April, the other the beginning of May.
  • I teach baby care class at my hospital. I wish that we offered more of the breathing technique (crunchy) type of preparing for labor classes. No matter how much I think I know as a nurse I still want to know more!!!!!
  • We had to sign up for a birthing class on May 23rd since that was the only time open still. My due date is June 1st. Fingers crossed she doesn't decide to come early.

  • At my birthing center you have to complete birth classes before you are 30 weeks. A lot were already full so I signed up for bradley classes but I'm cutting it close to 30 weeks when it's over.
  • This post reminded me to set up DH and I for our classes. We have a full day labor and childbirth class, and a 2 1/2 hour baby care and feeding class on May 2 and May 5 respectively. It seems weird to me that baby care is only worth 2 and half hours, but what can I do? This small town doesn't have much by way of resources. Being a FTM that class doesn't seem near long enough to teach me how to care for an infant, but the next nearest classes are over an hour away.

  • Our babycare is short as well. We do a bath on a real infant and show you cord care, talk about feedings. It seems short but you can't really take in a whole lot more without feeling overwhelmed.
  • I just signed DH and I up for a preparing for childbirth class and a learning to breast feed class. It was hard enough for me to get him to agree to go to those let alone trying to sign up for anything else lol.
  • I just registered for an all-day crash course in childbirth and intro breastfeeding - told DH about it and he responds "that's good". I don't think it has quite clicked with him that he will ALSO be attending this class muahaha.
  • We took the labor & delivery class, the breastfeeding (not helpful) and the baby basics class.  The labor and dleivery was helpful, but too long.  I think it was 3 sessions at 3 hours per.  We ended up ditching out of hte last one early.  They were talking about birth plans and what music to add to your playlist and what essential oils would be helpful..... puh-lease.  I ended up having a c-section but the class was still good.

The brestfeeding class was worthless.  They showed different holds etc but never really got into the "what happens when shit goes bad?" .  My kid lost 15% of her body weight in the first week because I was under producing and I didn't have a freaking clue what to do.

My husband benefited from the baby basics as he had never changed a diaper before in his life.  That was review for me but it was nice to be there to support him.  He's very proud of his ability to burrito a kid.

  • I ended up delivering on the day my class was scheduled so I missed it. But I think everything went great so don't panic! You can do just fine without the class!

  • I found the classes to be somewhat a waste if time... Covered information that is easily accessible in a pregnancy book. Also, even though it was through the hospital there was a lot of "medication shaming" and all it did was terrify me about using an epidural... I also found that the hospital staff was pretty rigid on what their protocol is and wasn't interested in keeping me off the IV so I could use the techniques learned in the class. They really should align the class more with what is practiced in the hospital. And then more medication shaming at the hospital ... Even my l & d nurse made a point to tell me "I never used an epidural with any of my 4 kids".... Ok because that is relevant to me how?!

I actually found yoga to be a really great preparation for birthing and it helped provide me with a helpful mindset to get through all the hospital nonsense. And since there was no epidural the breathing techniques from yoga I found way more helpful than Lamaze!
