I'm 25 years old and my quad came back positive for Down syndrome I have no family history nor my husband .. How accurate are these test ? My sonogram will be in two weeks . extremely worried and stress out even feeling depress

Re: Quad test

  • The test is about 75% accurate and Down syndrome in most cases is not inherited so family history doesn't matter.

  • So I'm all too familiar with how the doctors scare you and make you crazy so first just breathe. Second call your doctor and ask what the ratio is. This is a screening test and you cannot be positive or negative but what they should give you is a ratio 1:xxx for DS. Then ask for a NIPT test which insurance should cover, but call your insurance and see what they say. This is another screening test however it is a blood draw and exams the babies DNS which is free floating in your blood. This test does have false positives but not near as much as the quad screening. From there you can have a better idea of how to proceed. Some doctors are really bad about delivering the proper information. Which sounds like yours is. Mine was and that is why I switched doctors. Good luck and I know how difficult this time is. Hugs love.
  • I had blood work done for this Tuesday im a bit worried. Hopefully everything is well with your baby and mine as well.
  • Down Syndrome isn't hereditary, and isn't any fault of yours. I pray your baby is ok and will be happy and healthy no matter what! Hang in there!
  • I got the same positive result with 1/254 chance for DS, we are now headed to get a Level 2 US and genetic counseling for further testing. After many questions I found out that my test has a 95% false positive rate. I'm scared but not as worried as I was when they first told us we had a chance of DS. I have heard there are a lot of false positive with the quad. And there's also another blood test called the MaterniT21, which is 98% correct for testing for all types of DS. I may do that if necessary. I'm sure we are just fine;)
  • We'll according
To my doctor they can't give me no information on the ratio until I get my sonogram done and that is in two weeks .... After my sonogram I will meet with the genetics and there they will give me more information and confirm how the baby looks in the sonogram will determine if I will need more testing ... The frustration behind all this is the quad test shows positive results for Down syndrome ... That is all they could tell me for now .....
  • What I've been told over and over is this quad is only a screening not a diagnosis. They take your age, weight, gestational date along with blood test and place that into an equation to give you a positive or negative chance of DS. Knowing its a screening makes me feel a bit better, that doesn't mean there was actual DS detected. Try not to worry, easier said then done I know. I'm going thru it too.
    Hugs to you.
  • We were positive too after the 12 week ultrasound and blood test for Downs as well. We went ahead and had the blood genetic test, called diff. things, mine was Verify, and it was a false positive. Horrible couple of weeks going through it, but know the screenings are notoriously wrong. We just had our anatomy scan and baby is perfect! Hang in there and ask for the conclusive test to know for sure instead of more "screenings" there are conclusive tests out there! Good luck praying for quick resolution and that baby is ok!
  • My doc warned me that there can be a lot of false positives. Thinking positive thoughts for you!

If you have a 1 in 254 risk then you have a 253/254 (99.6%) chance of a 'false positive' ie healthy baby... Basic statistics. In the UK anything lower than 1:150 is considered low risk and you wouldn't be referred for further testing. We don't yet have NIPT available on the NHS so next step for us is amnio or CVS which are diagnostic not screening (ie give a definite yes or no).
  • Thank you for all the replies !! I'm really hoping it turns out to be a false result.. Because it's been a week since I found out and I been balling my eyes out with tears and stress .... I got to a point I'm feeling depress... I had postpartum depression with my daughter .. It's making me harder to cope with this results . Especially since I have two more weeks to go !!! I found out thru an appt letter than came in the mail .. My doctor did not have the courteSy to call and sit down with me to inform me the news ...
  • @giselle1312‌ I know it is hard but try not to worry too much until you know there is a problem to worry about. I came back as high risk and had an amnio. I couldn't allow myself to think about it too much as it wouldn't be fair on my two daughters to be upset in front of them so just comforted myself in accepting that whatever was going on with this baby's genes had already been long determined at conception and there was nothing I could do to help except keep calm and wait. The amnio was ok but the risk of miscarriage (about 1%) is a bit scary, especially for the first few weeks. The whole process took about 6 weeks from start to finish and it wasn't pleasant at all. Thankfully we have a healthy baby boy on the way and hopefully you will get your reassurance too x
  • I didn't even care to take all the Down Syndrome tests. Opted out of them. A child is a child. So I wouldn't even care if I had a Downs child. I'd be super happy either way.
Maybe that's because my 11 year old brother has Down Syndrome so I know everything about the syndrome and would be completely prepared.
Anyways, I pray that your baby is healthy.
