Breastfeeding

Stop producing at 3 months...

I have been EBF since LO was born. I have only pumped when I was leaving LO at home and had to go out. LO has always had between 4 and 7 dirty diapers a day, so I have always assumed my supply is good. She is however very small, 5th %tile in weight. The pedi has recommended I pump twice a day and give her that on top of nursing. Today, LO was being very fussy while nursing, my husband insisted on giving her formula. Therefore, I immediately went to pump. After 20 minutes on each side, I have less than .5 oz of milk pumped. It seems my supply has diminished! I have mothers milk tea, and the past couple nights have tried drinking a half bottle of beer. But not sure what else to do or why all of a sudden my supply is gone! TIA

Re: Stop producing at 3 months...

  • How old is your baby? Have you started any kind of birth control? Have you started your period? Hormonal changes can impact your supply. I would see a lactation consultant ASAP and do a weighed feeding and have them check for any previously undetected latching issues. How much you pump is not a very good indicator of how much milk you produce. I could BF DD without any issue but had a lot of problems pumping enough to keep up with her because she was better at getting milk than the pump was.

  • LO is 3 months old. I have not started birth control and have not had a period yet. Again today, LO was nursing and was very fussy and pulling off after about 5 minutes. I could not get her to re-latch. B/c I do not have a refrigerated supply of BM my husband gave her formula and I cried the entire time. I obviously want my LO to get what she needs but it is very depressing. I wish I had started storing a stash sooner. I'll be seeing an LC on Friday, I hope that's not too late. Thank you!
  • Good luck with the LC. I know the formula thing is hard but it's possible to get past these issues and breastfeed for as long as you want to so don't lose hope yet. While you're waiting for your appointment just keep offering frequently and pump when you can. Maybe even try nursing after she has had a couple of ounces from a bottle to see if she's more patient when she's not as hungry.
  • 3 months is a common growth spurt where baby never seems satisfied. Has your daughter dropped percentiles, or always been tiny? My son ranged between the 3rd and 7th percentiles from birth to 9 months, and out pediatrician never suggested pumping or supplementing. Tell your husband to back off and get some in person breastfeeding support.

  • At birth she was 7.5 lbs. But dropped the first week quite a bit and has never been above the 10th %tile and drops in the %tile every pedi visit. I'll be seeing an LC tomorrow and we are back at her pedi next week. I'm thinking for sure the 3 month growth spurt! Just yesterday and today she seems like she is in pain and is stretching a lot, also sleeping more! Hopefully that's all it is and she feels like herself again soon! Thanks!
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. What did the LC say?
  • We did the thing where we weighed baby then I nursed and we weighed her again. LO gained 1 oz in that time. LC said LO should be eating 3 oz per feeding. The feeding we had there was a quick one, so I'm thinking she does usually get more than 1 oz per feeding but that could be why she needs to nurse about every 1.5 hours. LC said to do power pumping to see if that helps for a couple days. I bought fenugreek and Brewers yeast yesterday. In good news. In 1 week she has gained 7 oz. that is the most for her so far! She has only averaged about 1lb a month. Up to 10 lbs 13 oz at 14 weeks!
  • I'd say it's stress... Mine did that then all of a sudden after I gave up breastfeeding (relieving the stress) the filled right back up. Try to relax and maybe be ok with spills ting once or twice a day until your supply returns :)
