Breastfeeding

Post-Plugged Duct Pain

About 2 weeks ago I experienced a plugged duct on my right side and even "passed" a small, white ball that I assume was hardened milk. During the ordeal and even now, 2 weeks later I am experiencing that toe-curling latch pain when my daughter first starts sucking. It happens exclusively on the right side, every single time while my left side remains unaffected and completely pain-free. This makes me think it is not an incorrect latch. Is this normal? When can I expect it to go away?

Re: Post-Plugged Duct Pain

  • My daughter is over 8 months, so we are past that "new to breastfeeding" stage. I had similar latching pain for a few weeks after she was born, but none since.

  • I'm experiencing the same thing. FX it gets better soon for both of us!
  • Warm compresses!! I understand your pain completely and the only thing that helps is a warm compress. You can buy some in Walmart and drug stores that you pop in the microwave for 45 secs or you can make your own with wash cloths in warm water. The heat helps the milk come out faster but I wouldn't use one while nursing for obvious reasons but try using one right before you nurse and in between feeding. Good luck honey :)
  • Thanks, I will have to try that. We have a moist heat pack that should do the trick.
