Climbing up stairs?

We live in a condo with 2 floors. This is my first baby and I am concerned with climbing up and down the stairs. My doctor never told me anything but because I've only had 2 appointments so far. My sister is 7 months and she has been told not to climb stairs. I am only 4, what is your opinion?

Re: Climbing up stairs?

  • You can climb stairs, you'll just be winded and exhausted but ok unless the doctor gives you a reason not to. I go up to the 3rd floor each day for work and had stairs in both my houses with both pregnancies. I wouldnt worry too much about it unless its causing you discomfort

  • I climb stairs countless times during the day. I've never heard of that being a restriction....seems a bit silly to me; you're pregnant, not disabled.

I agree- doesn't sound right- I lug a 40lb toddler up and down multiple steps throughout the day

  • With my first pregnancy I lived on a third floor apartment with stairs as the only option up and down. Even had to do it after a c-section. I now have a 26 pound toddler that I have to lug up and down stairs at home so unless you have a medical reason, stairs are fine. I am just more winded! :)

  • lol I worked on the 4th floor of an office building when I was pregnant and never used the elevator cause I wanted the exercise. I went up and down them probably 10-15 times every day (my boss was on a different floor and I worked closely with people on the 1st and 3rd floors that I had to see in person regularly). Stairs are not a problem unless it is something unusual for you (I would try to climb the great wall of china while pregnant if you never climb stairs in daily life), or unless you have pregnancy complications. I had my daughter on her due date with no complications other than her being breech.

  • I also live in a 2 story house where the only bathrooms/bedrooms are on the second floor. I was climbing up and down the day I came home from the hospital after a c-section while holding my baby, and I go up and down them a million times a day with my toddler now.
  • I'm not sure why you couldn't climb stairs when pregnant. What do they expect you to do in your daily life? It won't hurt the baby. I do it while holding a 32 pound toddler. I'm fine. It's great exercise actually.

  • I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to climb stairs. Does your sister have some unspoken complications here? Pregnant women do it all the time. Will you be winded? Sure.

  • I climb stairs all the time. 6 floors to my office. I especially do it towards the end to try and kickstart something. Unless there is a medical reason (like you are on bed rest) you can climb all the stairs you want.

  • Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, keep climbing!  It's good exercise!
  • Um, I live in a 2 story house and have a 3 and 4 year old. so unless I install an elevator, I'm pretty sure I'm going be using stairs several times a day! Unless there's a pregnancy complication, I can't imagine my dr telling me not to use stairs.
