Reaction to iron supplement?

Good morning ladies! My dr called the other morning to tell me that I passed my glucose test but have low iron levels and need to start a supplement. Currently I take the gummy prenatals that do not have iron. I was trying to stay away from excess iron if possible bc I get really constipated during pregnancy. So I took my first dose of an over the counter iron supplement last night after dinner. All night long I was so nauseous and fought off throwing up until this morning when I couldn't hold it back anymore. I have been so nauseous all day. Anyone on iron supplements and have this reaction? Did it get better as you took it? It says that what I'm experiencing are possible side effects. TIA!

  • I'm so sorry you're suffering! Maybe you can switch to a prenatal that has iron in it to make it more gentle? I use Garden of Life prenatals. They are super expensive at whole foods but more affordable (by50-75%) on Amazon. They are made from mostly organic food sources, not in a lab, so better absorbed... And gentler too. I usually have terrible constipation with iron supplements, but not now. My body runs on time ;). If you want to try totally natural, eat lots of spinach salads and some red meat and other things rich in iron. Hope this gives some helpful ideas. Feel better!

  • Try the Flintstones vitamins chewables with iron in it that's what I'm taking with my prenatal
I Also had low iron it helps
  • I've been taking gentle iron by solar it's a non constipation gentle on your stomach formula bought it at whole foods I've been on it for about a week and a half and have not had any issues
  • I've had these issues from the beginning. I'm now on three iron supplements a day, plus the iron from my prenatals. You could try slow release iron supplements or ask your doctor about different iron prescriptions he/she can get you. I started throwing up when I increased the dosage, and those were the suggestions from the nurse. Also, don't take the iron supplement at the same time as your prenatal. Good luck! I know the feeling and it's miserable!
  • I felt the same when I started on my iron supplement too, and it did eventually settle down. I had to be on a full iron supplement plus my prenatal a as my levels were very low. But my OB told me to start taking the iron every second day to ease into it. It helped with constipation too as it wasn't such a shock to my body. I have increased the fibre and iron in my meals too and that's helped a lot. Good luck and I hope you start feeling better.
  • I've been using the slow release iron, eating more fiber, and taking co lace as needed. It was hard on my system at first, but seems to have leveled out. My doc said to definitely take the slow release ...
