Nurseries and Nesting!

I've been stalking nursery idea boards on Pinterest and I definitely know I'm going all gender neutral!

So let's hear it ladies: what are your decorating ideas so far? Colors? Theme?

  • Ooh.  Well, the nursery is already off-white.  I think we will keep it as white as possible.  No true color scheme so that we aren't limited by colors.  Maybe have just a pop of color here and there.  My idea is to do a vintage science theme.  So, all things astronomy, dinosaurs, nature-themed vintage drawings.  My SO is going to make a mobile with felt of all the planets and the sun.  I would like to frame some butterflies I pinned for a class a few years ago.  There are lots of vintage-looking toys at the local Goodwill - old dinosaur puzzles, binoculars, stuff like that, and we've been on the lookout.  I like the vintage science theme because it's gender neutral, seems like something a kid can grow into, and my SO and I are both nerdy science folks.

  • I like your vintage science theme. That's really cool!
  • Oh holy hell I love that so much. DH and I are science nerds too! I may have to steal the science part of your idea! I was going to go with a white and medium gray base color and have pops of orange, light yellow and dark green.

  • Do it!!!  Steal the idea!  Please!  It's got potential and I'd love to see how you all approach it!

  • we need to do a follow up thread where we post pics of our nurseries! On that note, when do people typically finish decorating the nursery?

  • I have ideas all planned out using the blue gray paint that the room already is. Nothing over over the top or babyish. Just gotta wait to see which gender I get this time around. I would love to see what everyone comes up with.

  • I honestly have no idea. The room is currently white. I'm not even sure we'll change the color. For dd we had a friend print a gorgeous mural of Horton hears a who with trees and grass but then we moved. Idk that I want to go through all that again so we'll probably just do decorations and pops of color. The theme will come more toind after we find out the gender I'm sure.
  • We are going to go fairly neutral - pushing the pink and blue seems so wierd to me. The room is already tan, so I think we are going to use green as the main color. I love the vintage science idea. I have been leaning towards dinosaurs, but there are lot of great animal themed options out there. I really want the room to be able to grow with our child, so we aren't constantly redecorating, and I want it to feel like a kids room.

  • I've loved the forest themes before it was the cool thing to do. So we will pry still do that, definitely on the gender neutral side and not too boyish. We haven't decided if we're going to find out the gender of our baby and we'll want to reuse as much as possible next time!
  • We are moving at the end of the summer so I'm not really concerned about the nursery just yet. We are decided on girl and boy themes, if it's a boy we are going more masculine with gray and either green or orange. The hubs loves foxes so we might add some in. If it's a girl I want to go more chic than cutesy.
  • As long as we're in our current apartment, the new baby will share a room with his or her big brother. His theme is outer space, so if we have a boy, I'll probably stick with that, though I still have his woodland creature theme sheets and stuff from when he was first born.

If we have a girl, I plan to do lavender and brown and white/light wood. Our glider is white and brown, and the dressers and bookcase and crib are light wood/birch. We'll be getting a toddler bed that matches the older boy's existing crib so the new baby can have the crib.

Either way, I plan to put all the toddler stuff on one side of the room and baby on the other so each has his/her space.
